Coverting TBI to carb:

So if we are converting a vehicle originally with TBI to now run carb could we leave the original electric fuel pump in the tank?

Would this pose any restriction in the line?

There should be a feed and return line to the TBI. You do not need the return line. TBI runs on about 11-13 PSI, which is a bit much for a carb. Carbs need 3-6 PSI. IF, you were to keep the return line, and install a pressure regulator to return the unused fuel, you might be ok. What kind of carb are you planning to use?

I had a fuel log attached to my 67 Chevelle, using a holley carb. The fuel log ( the dual line attached to the carb) had an outlet at the rear of it, and I installed a regulator, to return the unused fuel. HTH

No, that's fine; The more people who can contribute, the better.


i should make it more clear; i don't want to use the original electrical pump. i wanted to know if it would be ok to leave it inline and have the mechanical pump draw through the line with the elec pump still in place, but after doing more research, it looks like, no it would be best to remove it. This basically involves dropping the tank, removing the pump and putting in a carbed line pickup (or maybe just a length of hose?).

Yes its way more easy to just remove it and make it less of a headache in the long run. My buddies brother went through the same thing. He said was just easier to take that tank and drop it and put the right pump in. Or you could also leave it and do a fuel pressure regulator but I have never had much luck with those any time I have used them! Just my .02 cents.

i did change to electric in my firebird
not tbi ,just a carbed 231
just for the alarm to shut off the fuel and emerg off
took it off the block and put it in the back,not the tank tho
if you decide to keep it electric change the sending unit and get a lower psi one
even then i had to rebuild the carb,it was leakin
