steering wheel removal 72

can't imagine it is too hard.... what do I need to remove the stock steering wheel from my 72. Do I need a puller. Also how difficult to replace with an aftermarket wheel and what do I need. Is there a kit..... any tricks or things to look out for...

This set pictured runs about $10 at harbor freight and will pull your wheel and many other things as well.

i have had look by just pulling the wheel it put up a little fight but it came off sometimes you may need a puller if you dont have one get a mallet wood or rubber and give the back of the steering wheel some good taps and it should break free, as for wrench size i dont rmember the correct size its a 13/16ths i think but can t be sure you will also need a phillps screw driver if your using a puller to take it off

i just loosen the nut then with my knees behind the wheel appling pressure i lake my 2lb hammer and with the end of the handle give a sharp blow on the nut and the wheel pops loose

Re: steering wheel removal 72

Having just recently changed out my 69's wheel,I was able to wiggle it back/forth and remove it w/o a puller.Seems like a straight pull or tapping with a hammer did nothing.

Your local auto parts store will rent a puller for free.

The 4 spoke wheel was used quite a bit by GM.The old Monzas had one with a cool horn button, had a spider in it.

Hey be careful if you just start pulling on it...sometimes they will fly off and hit you in the face
