all about carrier bearings

I need to know some stuff about carrier bearings....

there are 2 different types in the lmc catalog(pg 84)
and on my trucks...

one is real small and hangs from the top, and the other is an upside down "U" and bolts to the X member...

the "U" type shows 2 different sizes 1/2-3/4 ton ??
that is the kind I have.
I am converting my wifes 63 to an auto, so it needs a shorter front driveshaft, I have one off a 3 speed truck that looks like it will fit, but only half the carrier bearing is there... it looks to be a "U" type also, and I have no idea how to get it off...

any comments-suggestions?

I have the U shaped one on my truck. Theres two bolts on top and pop out and drive shaft, the bearing need to be pressed on and off. I had a local drive shaft shop do it for 50 bucks for the bearing and labor

some of the aftermarket companies have a bigger, beefier carrier bearing with a billet housing... I forget the company. Cpp or Early Classic I think.

i had the kind that hanged from the top ,i kept snapping them even the best one napa sold they are only pinch welds so i had a buddy put extra welds on one and never had the problem again ....but for taking them off theres two bolts to take off and then i used a bench vise and a rubber mallet and the new ones i just tapped on with a mallet....had to do it a couple times

Jon, As far as I know both the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton use the same HD carrier bearing. But maybe the ID is different? They are pressed onto the front shaft. I will never use one of those whimpy ones that hangs from the top. That is a very poor design, and I don't know what GM was thinking with that one.
