Do I need the idler arm?

Hi I'm gathering the parts to do the power steering conversion on my 66 and was wondering do I need the idler arm off the donor truck. Thanks in advance.

Re: Do I need the idler arm?

When I did my 1960, I got rid of all the undersize and expensive original steering linkage and replaced with the parts from the 1975 donor. I used the later idler arm as well so everything matched. I made a template out of manila file folder off the 1975 frame, which positioned the idler arm in exactly the correct location on my 1960 frame. I'm not sure what the 1966 idler looks like, but I'd want the newer components even if it requires a different mounting location.

Whenever I have done a disc brake conversion, I use the entire steering linkage from the donor truck. You will need to locate and drill new holes for it, but that can be done using the method markeb01 described. Besides, that makes it easier to remember what parts to get when something needs replaced.
