Can I do this with the engine supported via floor Jack's and be ok? I have my front end ripped out totally and figured I may as well properly blast the c member now too.

I'd wanna hang it before it supported it. I can't imagine any good places for a jackstand to go. On the balancer is a bad idea and the stamped oil pan isn't great either. Hopefully someone has done it and has a good idea for you.

Yeah, if you're gonna be working underneath it I would recommend supporting the engine from the top. That way you have more room to work underneath it.

Kinda what I figured, I was just hoping. I'll pull out the hoist and give it some support while I pull out the cross member.

If you have a hoist anyway, why wouldn't you just pull the motor? Its not that hard to pull the motor on these.

I don't like to roll around under the truck with jackstands and engine hoist in the way. I have always cut a piece of 2x4 that's the right length to span the fenders and sit on the inner lip of them. Stand the 2x4 up tall ways and use a ratchet strap around the board and engine to hold it up. Now you can roll around beneath the truck on a creeper without hitting your head on the damn hoist legs.

I am assuming you are speaking of the engine/suspension cross member not the bell housing cross member on a stick or the transmission cross member on an auto. Call me an old fart if you wish, but I would not be yanking a cross member with a 500lb. engine propped above my head or hanging on a chain from a couple of bolts. If you are changing a cross member, aren't you going to be removing rivets and drilling a couple of holes? Seems to me that you would want every thing out of the way as you are going to have to attack those rivets from top and bottom.

There is no way that I would be pulling the crossmember with the engine still anywhere near. You're gonna need the space to work with and having that chunk o'iron in the way is really gonna make you rethink what you're wanting to do.

Answers to questions:

Yes, I am talking about the front cross member the suspension mounts too not the transmission.

Yes I have a Hoist, but a very small workspace and the less stuff I have out the better off I am.

The "truck" is down to a bare frame and drivetrain. There is no front suspension on it at all at the moment and no body parts.

Not replacing, just blasting and painting the original.

I need to repaint it anyways so I'll pull the engine next weekend and set it aside as I finish up the suspension.

Thanks for the tips, and setting me straight.
