72 chevelle

He's asking 18k for this car, just wondering what you guys think about it. Needs weather stripping, bucket seats, carpet, dash, headliner, rear tray, center console, disk brake conversion, engine detail. Would also like to buy some stock rally wheels and keep these for the track. Makes 550hp to the rear wheels, 505 cubic inch on e85 drives it everywhere. I'm thinking if i bought this or traded him for it, i would have to put about another 3k into it. Car has no rust anywhere. Trunk has a little bit of surface rust, but can be cleaned up pretty easy... What do you guys think?

here's some more. It would also need power steering pump and some pulleys and brackets for the power steering...

Re: 72 chevelle

Id offer 13K only if I had it sitting in the bank and walk if he turns you down.. Let him turn you down and call you in a week. Im not big on the single headlight. Its 70 or older when it comes to chevelles for me.. Nice color though.

On another note... I doubt that he drives it everywhere on hoosier slicks..

Re: 72 chevelle

The paint job is done right, no overspray on anything or rust anywhere, and i couldn't find any bondo.. It would also need these headers cleaned up and coated...

I believe he does some street racing with these tires. He has another set of drag radials that he usually uses on the street...

Holy crap. Is that what Chevelles are bringing?

10k tops, but it's your money, I would wait. If the economy keeps tanking, someone will have one they want to give away soon.

Re: 72 chevelle

I just bought one with good floor pans and window channels that needs everything as far asheetmetal because of the price people are asking for these cars . i have seen them everwhere from 15 to 40 so I don't think he too far out of line if it's what you want . I will have approx 3 grand in sheetmetal before i'm done that you won't need ..

Agreed.. But, it does have a bit going for it. Body looks good, It has a big block w aluminum heads, electric water pump, optima battery, msd ignition.. Someone has put some money into it. I wouldnt trade a daily driver truck for it because it looks like it belongs on the track and whos to say it hasnt been shaken down hard a bunch of times. Id be wary and like I said. If you really want it, offer less (much less than 18k) and see if he calls you.

Also, Just noticed the spray plate under the carb. If your not great w mechanics have a knowledgeble friend take a look at that motor/tranny. I remember reading about a guy on here recently that bought a 454 truck with a spun bearing and it was costing him...

Re: 72 chevelle

18k may sound a little high for a strip car but if the paint and body work are done to a high standard that saves a lot of cash in the long run. He probably has 7-8k in the motor alone. As far as GM car values go, the chevelle is at the top of the heap. Make an offer your comfortable with that leaves a little wiggle room for him to counter offer.

Re: 72 chevelle

Ya right!! 550 horse to the rear end means 700 to the flywheel. Not with those tiny tube headers. Hammered in ones too.
Use a fridge magnet to check for bondo. You'll find some. Your pics show a quickie paint job. Can see orange peel in the front fenders.
Keep looking. There's better out there.
Here's a 70 chevelle up here for sale for not much more. Real good chance it makes 550 rwhp.

I've seen this car at the track run mid 10's on the motor and mid 9's on the spray and it weighs 3800lbs. It's making pretty good power.. It also has the dart 360 heads on it. And i couldn't see any orange peel in the paint anywhere, could be the light in the picture...

Re: 72 chevelle

I do agree, i think he wants to much for it. If somebody put another 2500 in interior and cleaned up the engine bay, i think it would be worth more than my truck..

Re: 72 chevelle

Well,
I have to agree with geezer, that car is all bling bling, looks like a headache to me, if you going to ask for that much money, the least you can do is clean up the interior, carpets are cheap and if he can get the engine to look good, how hard is it to remove the seat and put in a carpet and seat cover?

I'd pass. I could be wrong, but Id still walk.....

Re: 72 chevelle

Seems high to me. My opinion is around 1/2 that. No being an SS also brings the value down. There is a similar chevelle here in northern MN with similar body, comparable paint, (this is dark green) much nicer interior that can be bought for about $8500. Remember, a race car doesn't lead an easy life. The could only be 1 run left in that engine...

Re: 72 chevelle

I don't know.... Its tough to get a good idea with pics vs standing right in front of it. First glance engine looks chaotic, a little messy and the seats and interior....well it needs work. Take a look a lower priced ad I found in the NW:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/2518898252.html
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/ctd/2520261261.html
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ctd/2516062394.html
These are the quick finds...but they still need to be looked at in person.
Good luck finding what you want.....Chevelles are a fun vehicle!

Re: 72 chevelle

I came up with $6000 to completly redo the interior with bucket seats, centerconsole. Repaint the trunk, and pull the engine and redo the engine bay and new headers... That puts the car at $23500..... He said that he would entertain a roller for roller trade. Then i would know i have a great engine and tranny.. But my truck is done!!! Just thinking!!!

You should check out the trailing arms on the rearend. Known trouble spot when being hammered with big power.
Take your estimate to finish it and had 50% and you'll be closerto finished product.

Nice car esp the power plant. If it were a 66-67 I'd say maybe. I don't want to discourage you but that car would have to be in a lot better shape imo. Good luck regardless of what you decide.

Re: 72 chevelle

Thank you guys for your input. I told him that it would consider it if we did a roller for roller trade, where i kept my big block and turbo 400 which i know is in perfect condition, and he also throw $4000 my way so i could finish the window mouldings, carpet, dynomat, bucket seats, centerconsole etc.etc. I also said that my wife would kill me if i dumped a bunch of money into another project, especially now that i'm just about finished with the one i have... He said that he loved my truck, and he understands, but i can't see giving you that much money in the trade...
