What the hell!!!
So I'm driving my truck back from a appointment, getting on the on-ramp,cars coming fast so I jump on it. Intead of that old familiar chirp of the tires, I hear boom!!! What the hell I say to myself and get off the gas. I hit the gas pedal exspecting it to be my u joints, and for the truck to go no futher. To my surprise the truck is driving fine. Thats when I notice the hood of my truck has a huge dent in it. I'm thinking to myself its not far to get home, do not want to get towed so I keep driving listening for engine noise checking the gauges. She started getting hot, really hot. This is what I found when I got home. You tell me what you think.

Re: What the hell!!!
Yeah buddy! Aren't you glad you weren't leaned under the hood reving the engine by hand when it came apart?
I had a fan assembly come off while under the hood of a car once. Luckily it had a shroud on it and it contained the spinning blade assembly while it ran around and around inside the shroud tearing a new radiator all to hell. Uh, it got my attention!

Re: What the hell!!!
My friend had his head under the hood, alternator fan blade let go, hit him in the side of the head. Now, a very good mechanic, very capable person has a divot in the side of his head and a hard time tying his own shoes. Everyone should learn from this.

Re: What the hell!!!
What's really strange is that I was able to recover the blade and the belt ...both really comfy on my rubber gas line. My god I must have been a good person for there not to be a fire.

Re: What the hell!!!
That sucks! Of all the strange things that can happen, that's pretty rare.
Haha! That's such a perfect hole! I would have left it as a conversation piece. I literally laughed out loud. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: What the hell!!!
I had a similar thing happen with an S-10 I had in college. The fan on the alternator broke and sent a piece through the hood. It happened the exact time I was a hard 2nd gear. BOOM!! I thought I blew it up, my brother was beside me in his car and he said it sounded like a shot gun going off next to his head. I still have that small piece of alternator fan in my tool box at home as a souvenir.

Re: What the hell!!!
I've seen a lot of fans blow up as a BMW guy but most are plastic and only the worst make dents in the hood but they never come through. Its usually associated with a loose water pump so when you stomp on it and it vibrates BANG!! Sorry that happened to you. I'm sure you lost a pair of boxers in the process!!

I think I have a fan for you if you need one. I decided on this.
Chalk up one more reason for the switch over.

Re: What the hell!!!
i have a friend that had an86 sub 6.2l that for some started running away on him, he reached in to pull the fuel filter at the same time the fan let go, one blade caught him in the left arm pit and removed his arm. he lost so much blood he flat lined twice on the way to the hospital. he looks at life different now.
