Need to pull steering column...guide?
Hey all,
I need to pull the steering column in my 72 gmc with auto trans. One thing it's getting very difficult to shift as I'm guessing the grease has gunked up over time. Also I have some quirks in the wiring and was going to replace the or rebuilt the harness inside. Truck is all almost all original and I'm sure it's never been apart. So any helpful tips on this work? Thanks

This obviously isn't an A or an F car but the steering columns are similar to the 67-68 A & F design. Should be pretty useful.
http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?cat=4 There isn't a whole lot to it assuming its not a tilt. unbolt the cover at the firewall, disconnect the electrical connections at the base, and the 2 or 3 column bracket bolts at the upper portion. Then you just have to deal with whatever shift linkage is in your truck, sounds like 3 on the tree which i'm not familiar.

Re: Need to pull steering column...guide?
If your harness is getting old after 40 years Best plan if you don't want a fire.Go to M&H wire harness they make 3 new harness for your truck the 3 i'm talking about is the old Glass fuses the newer 2 pin fuses that are the bigger ones.and the new ones are the small 2 pin fuses. Now M&H uses all of the factory Color wiring and connector plugs Now if you have a 1968--70 truck and your running front side markers that you want them to Blink order the 1972 Package wire harness.
Reason why i tell every one to go to the last year these trucks where built was that you get all the newer updates that came in the truck in 1972. But if you just want the stock harness in your 1967--1971 trucks M&H makes it and man you will see things light up that you never thought that lite up and every thing is brighter. Never trust 40 year old wire casing it gets bridal and all it has to do it touch a negative ground area and you will smell smoke and that's all she wrote |
