Early 235 inline not oiling front half of rockers!
I have a 55-57 235 INLINE IN MY 54 TRUCK. I have noticed it is only oiling the rear rockers arms and not the front. No oil is coming out of the little holes up front in the rocker arms. The engine did sit for a while so Im sure that rocker tube is just clogged. Is there a way to clean it out without removing the entire tube/rocker assmebly?

Re: Early 235 inline not oiling front half of rockers!
I am pretty sure that the answer is no. I haven't done one for probably 40 years but it isn't a hard job to pull the assembly off and take it apart and clean everything out.
You will need to take the end plug out an clean out the bore of the shaft with something like a bore brush for a gun. If the tips of the rockers are worn so that they are recessed where they hit the valves you should take them to a machine shop that can dress them. This isn't something that you want to try to do on a bench grinder or belt sander by hand. Then you have to put everything back together in order with all the pieces in the correct places. And adjust the valves when you get it back together. No biggie but it needs to be done. This might be a big help to you http://www.1954advance-design.com/We...brication.html Last edited by mr48chev; 09-04-2011 at 11:59 PM. |

Re: Early 235 inline not oiling front half of rockers!
Your problem is not uncommon. 235 had oiling issues to the rockers.
Check the pressure at the block with a gauge. If its to low nothing you do will fix the rocker oiling problem. If the pressure is ok check it at the head and see if there is a restriction. if its ok the remove the shafts and clean them out. Check for fit of the rockers on the shaft and excessive grooving.. I wouldn't remove the end plugs you can get in there with a barrel brush and clean it enough use a drill bit and clean out the rocker feed holes. One fix is to pinch off the oiling tube after the bend as it comes off the rocker shaft there by forcing all the oil through the shaft. just don't pinch it off before the shaft. The toiler tube in the picture is from a 60 235 and has the end pinched, Its at the top of the picture. Pinching it off only works if you have enough pressure. |
