Got the heads flow tested.
I took the heads to the machine shop last week, the guy called me today. At .500 lift, they flow 225 int. and 155 exh. I was looking for more then that, but will have to go with this! Should put the HP somewhere around 450 to 460, was looking for 500. Now I got to make a choice, either go with the heads I got or buy another set. If I buy another set they will be AFR'S !

How much have you spent on the current set (including purchase price)? What mods & casting #'s?

I got right at $ 450.00 in them. They are 86 L98 vette heads, alum. with 2" intake valves and 1.55" exhaust valves in them, completely redone. New guides, valves, seals, springs, ported and polished.
I can't remember the casting number right off hand. Sam

If $450 is all you've got into them total, I don't think I'd mind too much...what're a set of AFR's going for these days, especially aluminum ones?

Are those fuel injection heads? Will they work with a carb? That sounds awesome, I thought that AFR's were running about $2200, maybe I'm losing it, but they're pretty pricey.

No, they are not fuel injected heads. These heads came off of a L98 vette, 85' 86' carburated. When I get them back I will give you the casting numbers. They are nice heads, I was just wanting to get more HP out of them, they are good for TQ, this engine will be around 475 to 500 ftlbtq.

The formula that AFR uses is. .257 x (max CFM) x (# of Cylinders) = HP potential.
.257X225X8=462.6 Thats max HP..if every thing is matched perfectly...AFRs 190 will only get you to 493

450$ total is a good deal. Sounds like it's going to be a nice package.

Um...all L98's were TPI engines. You can stick a carb intake on them no problem, though; Vortecs are the only GenI heads that need a special intake.
So technically, they're "fuelie" heads, in that they all came on a fuel injected engine originally...but you can run them either way.

I think you might have miss understood, they are 86 model, not 98. These head are not fuel injected heads, this was before they went to elec. fuel injection, 84 85 and 86 model vette's came with these stock, L98'S Alum. heads Sam

But even '84 was injected, even if it was the rancid dual-TBI crossfire setup. The L98 engine came out in 1985, with the tuned-port electronic fuel injection. It stayed more or less the same until the LT1 replaced it in the Corvette in 1992, and replaced it in the Camaro/Firebird in 1993.

All corvettes with L98 heads were TPI fuel injected. I drove (and popped the hood) on a '86 with TPI.
