When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

I realized I was hooked on these model trucks longgggg time ago. I mean hooked like a junky When I was a young kid the neighborhood "Cool Guy" had a 78" that was sweet. All the kids used to go hang out at his crib and he would let us wash it for him. As I got a little older, my step dads best friend bought a 1985 Silverado brand new. I was the summer before I went to High School. This truck was so clean it was hypnotising. I used to wash it every weekend for him. He would pay me $5 but I loved that truck so much I would have done it for "free". He kept it until around 95-96 and wound up with a newer one that just wasnt as appealing. In 2008 I purchased my 1981 GMC Shortbed which happens to be the 1st pickup truck I owned. My wife asked me what the hell I wanted an old truck like that for?? I just laughed and said "you wouldnt understand" the day i bought it i went straight to the parts store for sand paper and primer, and to certifit for lights, lenses, trim etc... she just dont understand

well..... thats my story. Whats yours???

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

Well I think what hooked me was how reliable these old trucks can be I put 25000 miles on my 77 through high school and all I did was put a new alternator on it and change the oil the truck had 196000 miles when I got it but dad had never done much other than change the oil and grease everything but other than that it didn’t require a lot of money invested in it to drive. my Jr. year in high school I bought my 79 and I changed the oil and fixed the brakes and replaced the belts and hoses and put tires on it and ended up with like 1500-1700 invested including buying the truck well the 79 is my DD now and it gives NO trouble at all besides an oil leak but I can deal with that. If I had a case of 10w-40 havoline and some gas money I would se off for California right now lol. But the other thing that caught my eye is the beautiful body style of the 73-80 Chevy’s I think they are just the best looking trucks ever fallowed closely buy the 81-87's

Yep...yep... I love these trucks. My plans are to finish my 81", then buy a 85". I like the 73" to 87" models.. Pops gave me a 65" stepside but it just wasnt my style. He ended up junking the truck. I have the TH-375 tranny out of it though. Thats all I wanted off it.

Guess I was about 5 or 6 and my friends loved my dads 69 mustang. they talked about how bad it was and how much they wanted one, and i said I'd rather have the truck. my dads 77 C10. everybody was shocked...ha. But i ended up having both for a while so it all worked out.

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

growing up i was a chevy guy.. I always liked having a pick up truck as its the most versitile vehicle one can own. As life went on i took in a 78 as a partial payment on a job and i went from there owning several others including the 82 i have now.. The old chevys were great trucks..

For me it was seeing a "Gentleman Jim" while in high school 1974. A couple years later, 1976, I bought a brand spanking new Scottsdale stepside, the orange one with white trim/stripes. The addiction continues.

I always loved my Dad's old 78' Scottsdale. It was my favorite, camper shell, bug guard, and all.

I've been hooked since I was little, and always wanted one.

I fell in love when that mid to late 80s two tone was so popular, the black and silver with the red pinstripe dividing it.

I was about 8 yrs. old when I first fell in love with these trucks. I'm going to to 42 this month, and I still love them even more than ever. You can't beat the quality of these old trucks. And not to mention they are kool to drive, everybody stairs when I drive past them in my 2wd 79 Blazer the the top off. They think it's a really short short bed. I've owened several different years of truck but the 73-87 has got to my favorite hands down. Square Bodys Rock

Agreed! Not a C-10 guy personally but I love K-10's

Started when I was little. My dad had a '78 Scottsdale K10 with a short bed. Had a lot of memories in it! First time out in the woods in a truck, first time being airborne in a vehicle, first time being towed home by a dodge .
The automatic tranny went and we got rid of it.

Even before I got my license, I've been looking for one. Found a bunch of project POS trucks, that just didn't seem to do anything for me. Then I got my K10 shortbed Cheyenne Super. When I first laid my eyes on it, I knew I had to have it. Took me about 5 years of looking! I wanna get it fixed up and make it resemble my dad's down to the torn up seat (Well, not that extreme )

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

Dad once had a 80s style c10 truck n I thought it was the coolest one ever. As I went through high school I started looking for my first car and I ended up getting a 75 c10 and I've loved working on it. Got t-boned on the driver's side and I only bumped my head and arm, and the Benz that hit me ended up totalled, I drove mine away, the Benz was towed. Easily one of the safest/strongest vehicles I've driven/been in.

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

2005, I bought my 73 in '84. In '05 the wife told me to go buy a new truck. I looked around and ended up with a crate engine. After 22 years, 400, miles 3 engines, 4 transmissions, 4 rearends, and welding the frame 3 times. I couldn't see parting with it.

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

In 92 durring the height of the sport truck era, I was looking for my first vehicle. Paging through the auto/truck trader over weeks, I realized that squares were so much more badass than the 89+. I bought a rootbeer brown 81 when I turned 16... totaled it before I turned 18 (oops). Then after trying a bug for a bit, I bought the 87 I have now when I was 19. It's been my second favorite money pit ever since, just behind my wife (though, my BC Rich compulsion is giving it a run).

So I guess the short answer is when I was 15 and loved White Zombie, Danzig, and AIC...

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

Was probably around 1985-6 when my aunts husband had this 1977 3/4 ton 4x4 that was awesome. He used it for plowing and towing his ski nautique ski boat.I wanted that truck so bad n my cousin n i fought he wanted the boat, i told him i dont care i wanted the truck.Well neither 1 of us got either 1.So in 1994 i bought a 1983 k5 blazer that needed some work but was a great toy.I wanted to paint it and then i ended up selling it.But in the meantime my mom wanted a stepside to tow our tag a long camper. So we found this 1980 c10 up the street. It needed alot of work but the motor was strong and looked wicked with the cragar SS wheels on it.I since then tore the stepside apart and it was so far gone i took what was good and scrapped the rest. Now the 2nd stepside i am building now will be the last 1 and i may build a 73-80 4x4 next or even a 2wd LWB with air ride suspension.

thanks
pat

The 80 before i tore it apart

The 77 i wanted bad

Re: When did you realize you had it bad for the C-10??

About 1992 when my Dad had a 84 C10 SWB, well really it was my Mom's truck. She used it to tow a gooseneck horse trailer. Well the 250 six wasn't cutting it so Dad bought a $25 69 Impala for the 350 in it, rebuilt it and swapped it in the truck.

I have fond memories when I was 8 of that truck, the swap, Dad repainting it blue. He put on the accessories of time. The cab roof lights, the fiberglass cab extension, hurricane wheels. When my parents sold the truck and trailer when we moved in 94, I was extremely upset about the truck, because of course I wanted it!

So how strange is it that when 2 years ago, when I went looking for a truck, I was offered a 86 C10 SWB for free! The truck I'd always wanted! Coincidence? Maybe. On top of it, Dad gave me the accessories he'd never installed on his C10, a bug shield and polished aluminum running boards. Plus the mint Hurricane wheels that were on his C10, he saved them all these years. Awesome.

If I can find pics I'll put them up. My mom also had an 80 C10 before it that they bought new.

I'm a K10 guy too....I think it might have something to do with being in the Army most of m life and the similiarity between the tanks and the trucks lol.
