Question GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

I have a guy that's contacting me about a gm under dash a/c that's in a 70? truck...he's looking to buy it and wanting to confirm

A) did dealers have a gm under dash unit they installed
B) how much would a nice working system be worth

It has the blue backed gm label on the unit under the dash and a frigidaire gm compressor under the hood.

So...anyone know if this might be the real deal?

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

Good question, we've got one in a 67. The truck is 1 owner all original except for driver fender, reupholstered seats and carpet. SPID shows Deluxe air heater, is that for the AC?

So it has the gm tag on it? That's interesting...I had never seen one before!

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

There is a picture of the controls in the owner's manual for the under dash type. It's on page 27 if you have a copy. The 1970 accessories flyer shows a factory-installed in dash AC, and a dealer installed under dash AC.

I don't see a GM label anywhere , but it has a/c on the spid . Just checked the compressor & it says York Automotive A Division of Borg-Warner .

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

I think deluxe air heater just refers to the heat system. I've seen it listed with no a/c before.

The one the guy is thinking of buying has a gm emblem on the actual under dash a/c unit...

I knew there were dealer installed units and many added aftermarket under dash units...but didn't know there was a GM labeled one...

This may help. I copied this from another thread. The units are black and maybe about 30 inches long. I have been watching for one for awhile.

I have Downtown's A/C unit in my 68 SB Fleet side. Had the system converted to 134a by the dealer, but they are unable to load freon bcuz POA valve is stuck. Does the entire system have to come out to replace the valve?

Thanks

Thank you! Awesome! Do you have any idea on value for one that has all the lines and the original compressor with brackets and is working?

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

I bought a '67 lwb from a one owner for parts and it had a unit similar to the one in the pictures. The man said it was factory. I don't know, I pulled and put it on the shelf when I parted out the truck. It is pretty cool, had a square compressor that mounted on a flat bracket, not the round tube compressor like you see on many.

I have seen a couple of those underdash "GM" units before. I am with Downtown and saying they were a dealer installed, but factory item. Trevor

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

Had a guy offer me one for my truck when I had it. All there, but laying on a shelf from a part-out he had done.

Asking $ 200 3-4 years ago. I hesitated because I knew it would need even more $$$ spent on it to make it operational, & someone else jumped on it.

Coulda - woulda - shoulda. He who hesitates has lost, etc.

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

Jonathon that install is pretty clean from what I have seen for dealer air. Family friend had a 70 with dealer air and they cut the top of the core support for the hoses to run through. They fixxed it of course with a piece universal strap. Complete hack job, dont think the dealer cared a whole lot. That particular truck used same under dash unit with GM label but utilized the york compressor rather than the standard GM a6 unit.

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

Guys,

I do not have an additional underdash system. What I do need is the owner's manual/instruction book that goes along with it. I have converted mine over to 134a but am having trouble charging it up due to a stuck POA valve. Need help in correcting the issue. Thanks!

Talking Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

This one I bought a few months ago out of a 67 Impala. I took it out of the Impala myself. I'm planning on it going in my 67 Ramp truck.
Gm Harrison unit.
I've ben working on it and refurbishing it.

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: GM labeled under dash air conditioning dealer installed???

For Beach-Burban,

Your underdash setup could very well be a dealer installed item as every photo in this thread seems different. I did considerable research on my unit and while it does not appear on the build sheet (still inside on the glovebox lid) I believe mine was installed at the dealer. Guess they used factory a/c parts when doing the install. Anyway, the engine bay looks factory. Had mine converted to R143 when I replaced the new compressor 5 years ago. Otherwise cools efficiently. I am still looking for an owner's manual for the Harrison Unit.

Thanks nac46...there does seem to be a lot of variants out there! I'm hoping this one does the job, then I'll dress it up a little as it fits so darn well!
