Which SBC Starter
I am looking for a starter for my 350 Chevy. I have looked in the archive and have received an education. I have a 168 tooth flexplate on my engine. All of the archive info shows that a 168 tooth flexplate uses a staggered bolt pattern starter. Looking at the photos of starters on the site as well as ebay, the staggered starter pattern has the outer bolt hole toward the rear of the vehicle as compared to the inner bolt hole which is closer to the front of the vehicle. My engine has the outer hole toward the front as compared to the inner which is to the rear. Please take a look at the pictures.

Re: Which SBC Starter
They're all on the passenger side, you'll be OK.

Re: Which SBC Starter
I know it sounds crazy but I can't get my brain around this. I have been under, and back and forth from the truck to the computer a hundred times.

Re: Which SBC Starter
Your motor is correct, nothing to worry about.
If you want to stick with a parts store starter, I would get one for a 1996 Chevy truck, 350. It will bolt up, but is much smaller than the stock ones.

Re: Which SBC Starter
OJ is right. We run the 96 Chevy starters on all our Chevy trucks. Smaller, lighter, header clearance and really turn the engine.

Re: Which SBC Starter
to avoid any headaches just ask for a starter on a 98 chevy tahoe at the parts store, 95-97 were crossover years and depending on the person behind the counter they could still hand you an old school bulky starter versus a later model gear reduction starter. you're also going to need some new starter bolts since the old style bolts are too long

Re: Which SBC Starter
I don't know how much gear reduction it has, but they sound like one.
They look more like a plain mini starter. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...29152_55002_0_ I am actually running a Jegs gear reduction starter on my truck as well as the bbc in my 55.

I am running a high torque old style ....which is heavy ...but my main problem is hot start from the header heat soak situation, cold start is fine. 10:1 355 w/forged flat tops ....maybe I'll try another heat shield last one was a piece of junk. another wondering thread ....... |

Re: Which SBC Starter
I ran the factory type on my 3rd gen camaro, with headers, 10:1 compression. Never had any issues.
I have the jegs one on our 55, with an 11:1 427 big block, and headers, no issues with it either. I have the jegs on on my truck too, but its a stock 350.
