Can you tell which tranny from the SPID?

I think this is what is in my '68. Regular old 4 speed, I guess.

But I have a question about it. The shifter lifts straight up out of the tranny about a half inch or 3/4's or so, and when it's cold it takes a pretty good push to go up into 3rd gear, and only then that shifter comes up and then when it goes into third, the shifter slams into the after market gauges, that the PO installed in the preferred location of right under the heater controls( using the heater control mounting screws)

My question is-is there a way to stop the shifter from coming up out of the tranny?

Thanks, Bruceman. That gives me an idea of where to look.
