65 factory carb cfm's ?
I have a 65 1/2 ton 230 cid and a 64 1/2 ton 292 cid. does anyone know what the factory cfm's were for the rochester 1 bbls used on these engines? I was thinking of putting the 292 carb on my 230. I have tore both carbs down and the jet size is 57 on the 230 and 59 on the 292. I also have a 500 cfm holley 2bbl and the jet size is 73 on it..... trying to determine what carb will be best.
Thanks |

Re: 65 factory carb cfm's ?
Not a big expert here but I had a 230 in my '63 and these are low-po engines (mine with very weak valve springs and leaking rings from decades of hard use) and if you haven't made substantial upgrades there will be no use in putting a 500 Holly on there or even the larger jetted one. I would stick with the original. But why couldn't you just bolt on the other ones and see for yourself? Maybe there would be some gain.

Re: 65 factory carb cfm's ?
I built this 230 engine years ago. It has been bored, 307 pistons ( makes it a flat top engine) clevite cam ( nothing radical, just like an RV cam ) ported on the head ( just to clean everything up). I want to keep the stock look, but squeeze some power out of it. I ran a GM 2 barrel and then a Ford 2 barrel both on the stock intake with an adapter plate, ran good but wanna go with a stock look. I was wondering what the stock CFM carbs were and hoping to get enough out of the 292 carb for the appearance I want. The truck is torn down for the winter so I cant just try carbs until I get the desired look and performance. I will tune the 1 bbl carb until I squeeze enough CFM and plan on swapping to the bigger 292 exhaust manifold. Any body got any performance ideas while retaining a stock appearance? I currently have later HEI but am considering a point distributor with a pickup module. Engine has maybe 5,000 miles on it since I built it 15 years ago. It has mostly just been sitting until life slowed down so I could get back to it.
