I removed my gas tank today (pics) have a few questions..
I removed my gas tank check it out. My buddy says that the caked on dirt isnt dirt but a kind of protectant gm sprays on the gas tanks. I think my buddy is a idiot and think its just caked on dirt. When I scrape the caked on dirt with a screwdriver it comes off easily. My truck is a 74 swb.

Heres the inside of the tank has some minor rust in the bottom. I sanded it with some fine sandpaper and it came off pretty well (after pic was taken). I still dont know if I should clean this one up or buy a new one. The bottom just has this light rust the rest of it is in very good shape.

My fuel gauge is stuck at 1/4 and doesnt move. Im going to but a new floater. Heres the old one. Notice the frayed wire, may that be the cause? Im also going to get new fuel lines the old ones like like crap.

Poor or no ground is typical with fuel gauges, looks like you found your problem.
It's up to you if you want a new tank. Etch this one, apply a coating and re-use it if that's the worst of it. Yes your friend is an idiot. Pressure wash, etch and paint the outside. I recommend engine enamel, it will always stay clean and won't rust, ever. Same for the shield. |

Looks good to me inside and out. Any pointers for helping the process of loosening the bolts and straps?
