69 LWB - Uncle Homer - Muffler Suggestions?

I just got a 69 Chevy pickup that I need some help on, always wanted a truck like this to work on but I dont know much. This truck was bought from the dealership by my great uncle in 1969, he passed away a few years back and his wife finally sold it to me last month. He was a mechanic by trade and kept this truck running like a top, drove two miles each day in it back and forth to work.

It is a 307 with three on the tree. Changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap. New brakes, had the drums turned and replaced the master cylinder. I got the seat reupholstered and now I am ready to take my vintage plates to the courthouse and register it. Sounds like i have a leak in the exhaust just behind the exhaust manifolds. I want to replace to whole exhaust system with some flowmasters.

Should I have the muffler shop put an H pipe in the exhaust before it goes into each muffler? And what type of flowmaster should I get for it? I am looking on ebay and there is just so much to choose from. Pipe size? I don't know what I need and what would be best sound and performance. Suggestions and input would be greatly appreciated.

I am not going to change the truck much, I like the stock look. I tracked down two new rally wheels and beauty rings for it. Bought some center caps and 7/16 conversion lugs so I can put a newer set of chrome center caps and not those 4x4 since this is a 6 lug.

Might lower the truck a few inches, nothing too dramatic. Plan to insulate the cab floor and move the gas tank underneath the truck.

Just want a nice old pickup I can drive with my daughter and wife around in. Any suggestions on the exhaust setup or anything else would be appreciated.

What kind of sound do you want? Mild or aggressive? If you just want something mild, I suggest the Flowmaster 50 Series with DeltaFlow. They have a very mild sound without sounding too aggressive. Any of the 40 series mufflers will have an aggressive sound, but any of them with DeltaFlow will sound more toned down that any without.

Also, I recently switched from Flowmasters on my truck to Magnaflows. They have a very subtle tone at low rpm speeds, but still let everyone know you're there when you give it WOT.

An H-pipe will help balance out exhaust pulses and increase some torque output and will only slightly alter the tone of the mufflers. An x-pipe will make a noticeable change in the tone of the mufflers, but will increase the "scavenging" effect and increases overall horspower and torque. I suggest using either with any exhaust system.

On that 307, I wouldn't run any larger than 2-1/4" pipe. That size pipe will also work well with even a mild 350 if you ever plan to change engines in the future.

Get on youtube and search different mufflers. You are the only one who knows what you like. Personally I'm a Magnaflow guy, quiet at idle and normal driving, step on it and it wakes up nicely.

I have 50's Flows on my longhorn, & they have a nice sound (the 40's were too loud for this old man!). On my 02 silverado, I installed a Magnaflow(stock exhaust otherwise),& really like the sound(nice low rumble cruzin,but she barks when you stand on the loud peddle) crazyL

I appreciate the responses, I looked on youtube and I think I will go with the flowmaster 50s. I am going to put some sound deadening material when I put new carpet in. I will update when I get some new pictures.

Nice truck. My opinion, Flowmasters sound terrible on a stock to mild motor. And they are too loud for a driver. And yes, I have a set on my '69 Camaro. And a set in my garage I pulled off my K30 dually with a 454.

I am a fan of Walker Dynomax mufflers for price and sound. I have 2 1/2" Hemi Turbo mufflers on my Jimmy and they have a great roar when you are in the gas, but quiet around town.

The standard Dynomax mufflers would be ideal for your setup and a 2 1/4" exhaust should be sufficient. That's what I put on my K30.

If you want it a little louder, go 2 1/2". It will cost you more $ and won't be worth anything power wise with that 307, but money ahead if you ever put more motor in it.

And tailpipes are your friend.

Got the truck all cleaned up and some rally wheels on it. Discount tire had a $100 rebate and upgraded the tires since they didnt have the cheaper ones in stock. I got all 4 tires mounted and balanced for a grand total of just under $250!

I bought a set of 7/16 conversion lug nuts off ebay with chrome caps and I am just waiting on some late 80 centercaps to come in. Got them on ebay as well.

I am going to try some rubbing compound, polish and wax soon to try to bring back the paint. I have seen a few threads that gave me some hope that I can bring the original paint back to nice shine.

Going to remove the truck box and rails soon also.

My dad took it out for a test drive today, he is doing the work since I am in Houston with a pregnant wife right now, said there was alot of play in the front end. Found a complete front end kit on ebay for about $230, figure I should just go ahead and change everything out at once.

Congrats, kids are awesome.
I would change out everything at once, but I would get some name brand parts in there. I have never had luck with no name or parts store brand front end parts. Try www.rockauto.com

I have FM 70's on my burb with an H pipe set up, and I am beginning to dislike the set up. Since I do get a slight drone at highway speeds, but at idle they sound great to me. So sooner or later they are gonna be replaced.

The mufflers I plan on putting on the 1970 SWB PU are gonna be quiet, since it has nothing to prove and I prefer to drive the truck and hear the motor and not an obnoxious exhaust tone.
