Any help with wheel cylinder ID? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello.

I am not sure which year forum to post this to, but I have a '67 SWB C10 truck that has been Frankensteined together. I find new things everytime I try to work on it. This time, the wheel cylinders (front) did not compress and caused my front brakes (the shoe to not compress in) to smoke and eat to the point that the coating of the wheel drums flaked off.

Anyways, I was wondering if my wheel cylinder came from a 1946 or later model Chevy (possibly a 1 Ton truck) (pic attached); I had taken the driver's side a part to see the cap size and it has a 1 1/8" cap that pushes the pistons outwards.

Also, I have a question on the front brake system set up. Is it missing a e-brake bracket and spring?? There is no hole on the backing plate of the brake system where the wheel cylinder is mounted onto with 1 screw. So I am confused. If it comes with an e-brake, that explains why the shoe did not compress in and causing my front brakes to catch smoke and heat up. But, why didn't it happen when I drove it from Hemet to LB (100 miles away)?? If not, is that my front brake system okay and not missing any parts or springs??

Anyways, any feedback is useful so I can get the front brakes going and completed.

Wheel cylinder looks correct just as my 1969 GMC has, Front 1 1/8" bore.

Then why am I getting the wrong type of wheel cylinder from Autozone and O'reilly? My cylinder is older they say...1946 old. So you're telling me your wheel cylinder is not a '69, but an older model?? I mentioned that it was a '67, CHEV c10 truck and it's the same type of wheel cylinder til the 70's.

1#well from 1960--70 uses that brake system.Buy new wheel cylinders.Reason why there so cheap to buy and you really don't want to run down a Kid.if your brakes fail.

2# front brakes don't have emergency brake cables only the rear dose.

3#Your backing plates need to be removed and taken to a welding shop so that the groves where the brake shoes slide or move back and forth on are smooth.There can not be any groves in that backing plate where the side of the brake shoe touches.Remember to put a little grease on those area's where the brake shoe touches.So that the shoe can side back and forth easy makes your brakes last longer and stop better.

4# when you do a big brake job.Best off to have your brake drums turned to get out any uneven spots Hard spots and so on.It will make your braking faster and just gives you a good peace of mind that you know your drum brakes are at there best.

reason why i say that if you have kids would you feel safe with them driving it or your grand parents.Think safety.

...so the huge empty area between both brake shoes is fine?? Just wanted to make sure that it's not missing any parts between that empty area. Also, the wheel cylinder that I have is not matching to the ones given by Autozone & Oreillys. Theirs have 2 screws that the wheel cylinder mounts on the backing plate. Mine has one huge screw (via picture I provided). A sales associate had to go to the back and look at a catalog and determine what type of wheel cylinder I have. And it's from a 1946 Chevy 1 ton (since it has a 1 1/8" boot inside that the spring pushes). This cost $20 each. While the other one that doesn't match my existing one,but says its for 67 Chevy c10 is $10.

BTW, Where do you get your wheel cylinders from?? I guess NAPA is worth a try tomorrow.

Find a Napa if you can them to other stores have become jokes lately

67-70 i believe use the same front wheel cylinder, if they are giving you the wrong one its for the REAR (1")

No..he said its for the front and even wrote pass/driver side on each. It came with two screws that mounts on the backing plate, but the one I have has one big screw that mounts to a bracket/control arm?? and the backing plate. :shrug:

...that's the wrong part. As you compare mines and the link provided, mine has a bracket attached to it, which holds the wheel cylinder. The link you posted was the part given to me, which had 2 screws to mount it to the backing plate. Mine only required 1 big screw that mounted onto the backing plate to a bracket or control arm?? That's why I'm confused to what year this set up really came from and if it is really missing a part between the empty space on both brake shoe. It doesn't have any holes on the backing plate for the E brake bracket and cable to go through, but just want a peace of mind and fix this. [sigh]

..SO that huge empty space between the brake shoes is normal? So, I don't have a 67 wheel cylinder, but a 66??

i'd take old one in the shop and they can read the identification numbers on it to get you the same ones

GM is infamous with carryover parts. If they had enough 1966 parts, they would put them on the early 1967 vehicles..

...stupid question, but if the wheel cylinder pushes the brake shoe outwards to come in contact with the brake drums to brake, what pulls it back inwards to it's original position so it doesn't rub on the brake drum and burn up?? Is it the wheel cylinder?

yeah i was just looking at that they do seem to be missing i and ase cert in brake but i dont know about front drums very well to know if they suppose ot have that i kknow the rear do for the p-brake, shoes are returned by the spring that go from teyh shoe to that top post

...yea, I want to know if it is missing something in the front. Need pics to verify since the ones I seen on google image seems to contradict. Does anyone know with pics to show? I hope it isn't missing anything and it was just a faulty wheel cylinder that caused my fronts to burn up and drag the shoe with the drums. If, it's missing a bracket, I'd like to get that put on before investing on new wheel cylinders, and new front brakes.

I just pulled my '69 apart do totally replace the brake system. There is no bracket for the front brakes. I feel confident saying this because my father-in-law owned the truck from the day it rolled off the line until he gave it to me and he did all the maintenance over the years. He is very concerned with details and would not have overlooked that bracket putting the brakes back together. The rear brakes do have the bracket though.

The "bracket" you seem to be referring to and show in the photo is the parking brake and the photo you're looking at is a rear assembly. As has already been stated here the front brakes do NOT have this assembly. The parking brake cable is only attached to the rear brakes.
