Power steering problem
The power steering on my 72 GMC 4X4 has been acting up. When driving slow like pulling into a parking space my steering becomes stiff, the belt is tight and not slipping and the fluid level is full. Before I buy a new pump what else should I look for? It's been like this for some time but it has been last on my list of repairs and it's time to deal with it. If I do end up needing to replace it I am considering a pump with a remote tank, the existing pump is hard to get to and almost impossible to check the fluid level and fill. Any idea if there are pumps with remote tanks that will fit the stock mounts?
Thanks for any suggestions! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Power steering problem
Hugger is right on ..an easy repair with no cost. disconnect the pressure line at the pump. Remove the fitting thus removing that orfice. Blow it out with compressed air ensure it isn't plugged up. Then reinstall, bleed and see if that fixs your sluggish steering issues. If after this it still is giving you indications and your sure it is free of air consider pump replacement. Usually that orfice/ screen thing can get something blocking it's intended use. Good Luck.
