I did NOT strip the crank, but one of the three the bolt that hold the pulleys on. I'm going to try and run a 3/8-24 tap through to clean it up, but if that doesn't work.
Since I still have two good 3/8 holes and the crank bolt / larger washer will i be ok not using the third 3/8 stripped hole. Or will that mess up the balance?

Could i use a smaller bolt and nut it on the back side?

Last result is heil coil it, its just in a horrible place.

I was going to recommend a heli coil, i have used them with great success. i used one awhile back on a outer head bolt with no problems.

Try a longer bolt in all three holes, just check to see if it comes too far out the other side. Sometimes you might have extra thread past the stripped area. .02

Use a heli-coil. Or you could do like BigSnook said and try a longer bolt. Maybe you could tap it a little
deeper with a standard 3/8-24?

wouldn't the weight difference of the heli-coil affect the accuracy of the balancer? If you plan on reusing the balancer I would think it would throw it off a little. if you are replacing it with a new one, then yea I'd say a longer bolt or heli-coil. That's just my thoughts though.

Its a brand new balancer, that I missed up. So don't really want to remove it and throw it. How bad would it throw it off if i put a longer smaller bolt with a nut on the back side ?

a helpful guy in the fastener supply business MIGHT just be able to tell you that there is a metric bolt the right diameter to fit the damaged hole. You might have to pass the right size drill bit and then tap it with a metric tap. I've stripped treads in some Jap motorcycle stuff and tapped it to S.A.E. ..... didn't even have to redrill it. 'Course it WAS in aluminum. GOOD LUCK!

A simple Dual system (Metric/SAE) bolt guage is $2-3 most places and can help in these problems.I have several and even keep one in my JYing toolbox.Get the one that has pegs for the nuts on the outside.

No way I would bolt and nut on the backside. This is a balanced part. If a helicoil won't work, I would get a new one. They are not that expensive.

You should be able to run the right size bolt through the back of the balancer and it may help clean out the threads so you can get the bolt going in correctly. (Don't ask me how I know this, but it does work

Am I wrong in assuming the 3 bolt holes are for installing/removing the balancer? It's been a long time since I had to mess with one. If that's the case then I would think a bolt all the way through and remove it when you're finished, would work ok.

all fixed up ! I ran a 3/8 24 tap through it cleaned up the first couple threads. I did get a longer bolt cause i did notice the threads near the end of the hole were still good like you said. So presto ! All done !

Good job! glad that worked out for you. If you were worried about it causing balance issues, you could chase all three deeper and use the same length bolts on all three.

cool glad you got it all fixed up. I just went out and looked and realized they bolt holes are for the pulley too. DUHH!!
