Re: motor mount placement??????

my 66 has 2 sets of holes, 3 on ea. side of the frame rail and 2 on the cross member. i used the forward set, allowed plenty of room for hei, tall valve covers and the fan is close to the radiator with a short spacer and long wp. as far as trans goes i used a mount from a later yr ... 70-72ish i think its from.

I had to 'massage' my firewall with a BFH because my tall valve covers were hitting. It's not hard. Just be persuasive.

Well after fighting these motor mounts for hours i give up. i moved them forward got one side lined up and bolted in. move to the other side and the holea are off by over an inch and the motor mount plate is hanging over the edge of the frame.

Re: motor mount placement??????

If you choose to move the engine to the forward motor mount bracket holes, you need to use the '67-'72 small block motor mount brackets. They are shorter, which is why your current brackets won't work, they are too long for that position. In all the years I have been working on these trucks, I have always placed small blocks in the original location. No problems with HEI clearance nor with medium height valve covers.

Re: motor mount placement??????

I have mine set in the rear most holes and run both an HEI as well as tall valve covers. It is a tight fit but it does fit.

You may try the rear holes in the frame and move the mounts as far forward as possible to get the clearance you need (the holes in my mounts are oval).

I run the SM420 trans so I don't know how an auto will line up.

Thanks, I guess Ill move it back tonight. Im still unsure tho how to get the tranny to clear the floor tho. Its just a th350 like everyone else uses. The Brackets I am using are the stock ones from my 230 and everyone says they are the one I need to use. I just don't know what the deal is.

I had mine in the rear holes and slid forward as far as possible. The motor would clear, but the transmission would hit the floor. If I let the tranny down some to clear it would tild the engine and it'd be up against the firewall.

Re: motor mount placement??????

are the 230 6-cylinder mount brackets are the same as V-8s? if they're taller, that might be the problem. I'm assuming you're putting a 350/350 combo in in place of your 6, maybe I misunderstood.

Yep putting a 350/350 in. the six cylinder brackets look the same as the brackets in my 65 parts truck that has the origional 283 v8.

Re: motor mount placement??????

you may have to do some work to the floor?. I don't know about a 350 trans(but there have been a ton of them installed in these trucks, so someone should say something). have your cab mounts been replaced and or is there any rust problems with the floors or bracing?

Re: motor mount placement??????

I was thinking the same thing as Padresag. Wondering if the cab mounts were shot and causing the cab to drop. Mine ('66) has a 350 and the HEI
is right up against the firewall. I hope i never have to take it out.

Re: motor mount placement??????

oh ya, i forgot to mention the perches are from a 72. and i had to use like 3 washer as spacers to make it level on the frame rail.

i this pic he uses the front set too , only i put the spacers in and he just tightened it down.

Re: motor mount placement??????

With the hei right up against the fire wall is it even possible to pull the distributor? I plan on putting a new intake on when the engine is in. If I cant get the distibutor out I may want to put the intake on when it comes in. Man, this project has been nothing but a head ache, lol. I should have just left the 230 in it and drove 50mph everywhere haha.

Re: motor mount placement??????

I can't speak for the others. Mine is up against the firewall from the PO. I've read other posts where they have clearance for their HEI. So i don't know
the correct answer. I know mine would a PITA though.

Re: motor mount placement??????

I found a crossmember for my tranny in ecklers. its only 89 bucks so I think ill order that. I may go ahead and order my intake and install it before the motor goes in incase the distributor cant come out afterwards. I hope I can do it. I was planning to have the mechanic put it on.

Re: motor mount placement??????

My experience is that the six cylinder mounts are the same with an extra part added to reach. in my 65, I have a 350/350 and the distributor is almost touching but will turn or come out ok. I have the low floor hump and have no problems there. I have tall valve covers and one side touches under torque. Could the 80s cross member be causing the problem? On my 63 I moved the motor to the front and got some 67 or 68 motor mounts, but it didn't work. Could be the guy I bought them from was wrong about what they were. I ended up having the stock mounts modified to sit down right with new holes in the cross member.

Re: motor mount placement??????

I dont remember for sure, but can the perches be swapped side to side? There isnt a way to put them in backwards where they push the engine back or forward a little further is there? I havent had them out in years so I cant remember.

I do have the forward holes used in the '64, and in the '66 I just swapped the dizzy for HEI and it fit no problem with the stock mounting position(rear holes).

Re: motor mount placement??????

The 230/250 and the small block motor mounts are all the same. It is possible to install the brackets backwards, I hadn't thought of that before. As for an auto trans crossmember, I always use the auto trans crossmembers from a '63-'87 truck. I have never had trouble removing an HEI with the engine in the stock location.
