Darn Rust Belt Crap!
i pulled the trans out of my '86yesterday, because it needed replaced (no 3rd or 4th gear) and decided to start taking the AIR system off of it. upon taking the trans out, i put a jackstand under the oil pan, just like i have always done. when i let the engine down, the pan crushed right around the head of the jackstand. i've never had a problem like this before. so now, lucky me, i get to pull the motor out to replace the oil pan. why is it that every time i get a seemingly small project like this, it turns into something major? thanks for letting me vent... im going back to the garage now, hopefully things wont get worse.

You can change the pan without even touching the engine...well not literaly, but you don't need to remove or even jack up the engine to do this. Done it before.

Seriously....you always use your oil pan for a jackstand support?? WOW. never heard of anyone doing that on purpose.

ive used the oil pan with a jack under it to support the engine during a tranny swap but i always use a wooden block or something similar to support the pan as well.not making fun of anyone here just offering a simple suggestion.

Yeah you dont need to pull the engine to just change the pan. Hell, the engine can sit there by itself for a few minutes un-supported while the pan is being changed. I use the pan for support while the tranny is out too, from now on I think Ill support it at the edge were its less likely to crush.

the jackstand i was using is the same one i've always used before for this purpose, it has a flat head that is about 4" x 6". and Dave, the jackstand was just to keep the engine from rocking in the mounts while i'm working on it.

I know if I can can the oil pan gasket on my BBC with it still in the truck a small block should be a breeze.
