Installing Power Brakes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Members,

I am wanting to install power brakes to my 72 GMC. Can anyone lead me in the direction of where to buy the parts and how hard the install is.

performance online sells a kit.
I just bought all new stuff from them to swap out my old stock power drumbrake setup.
It should be here by the end of the week.
I can post up some info when it arrives if you would like.

I purchased the below items..

Booster & MC Kit

Front Power Brake Line Kit

Disc conversion kit

are you keeping the rears a drum setup or disc brakes too
i got mine from cpp

If you are gonna keep the current configuration[drum,drum] it would be a matter of pulling the m/c loose from the firewall. After that you would be ready for the booster install and then bolt the m/c back up to the booster.
There was a write up about two weeks ago on someone that went to a booster system and did'nt break the lines loose or anything like that so no bleeding was needed. It appears to me it is as simple as replacing the m/c because you just unbolt and place the booster in between. Then all that would be left is to plumb it by adding manifold vaccum

It would currently be a disc/drum being a 72. You need the booster and correct rod that goes into the booster, with the bracket for the booster. You also might need a different proportioning valve, but I'm not sure on that. Good luck

You have the right MC and PROPORTIONING VALVE CURRENTLY.

Just get some brackets from the board/junkyard and a booster, if the booster is good then your lucky paint it up and run it, it its bad well you've saved yourself the $ for a core

It does have disc front and drum rear. So I can use my current master cylinder and by a booster. Then after install bleed everything correct?

Welcome to the site from Texas!
If you will take the master loose from the firewall, and dont take the brake lines loose you wont even have to bleed the lines. Just slip the booster in between and bolt it all together.

Just buy a 71-72 booster.
Look here in the classifieds to get the correct mounting bracket.
(You might even find a booster also)
