Question Not a 350 after all??

For those who don't know the background, I bought a 350 out of a friends dad's Vette for my truck when my 305 went south on me. When my cousin and I went to replace all of the seals on it before putting it in, we discovered it had a couple of pitted cilynder walls and a head that needed to get reworked. W/o the $ to get the work done to it, I left it at that.
Well, this is where the question comes in. My cousine decided to check the numbers on the engine. Aparently, it is not a 350 after all. It is a 327 w/ 70cc heads. So is this a good thing?? What kind of poetential does this thing have? BTW it is already bored 30 over as is.

well depends on what year it is. if its a 68 or 69 large journal 327 that would be great cuase the crank journals are same size as 350's. i got a 68 327 and a 69 327 on engine stands out in the garage right now. they are both becoming 383's.

What year vette did it come out of? I believe they did away with the 327's in vette's after 71...The 327s before then, we're pretty bad

Forgive me for being a younin and all but what is so special about a 327. I'm going to assume decent power and the revving capabilities? Or is it something else like some good combo with a crank and rods?

327's were short stroked and made them great high revving engines. Back in my day, it was considered something to have one of these in your vehicle. They made most of their power in the upper rpm. They are a 4" block, same as a 350. So as stated above, if it's the large journal crank block, it can be made into a 350 with a crank change.

Nothing like the sound of a screaming 327 turning 7 or 8 grand.

mmmmmmm short stroke motors

327's, because of their big bore, were the motors to have back in the day. Then they got made into strokers [350cid] and those were the motors to have. Now we stroke 350's into 383's and those are the motors to have! Well I say screw that. Hope its a SJ crank, find a 283 crank and swap it in, and have a sweet super high revving 302!

I belive the Vette is a 75.
When all the dealing was going on, it was always refered to as a 350, so maybe that was done to it already. It came w/ intake and 650 Holley, so I know he had done some work to it. He just pulled it out to put a 95 LS1 in it's place.

Sorry, but I am kind of new at this, but how would I determine what type of crank it has in it? What would be the benefit of a high rever over a lower end power engine??

BTW, if all goes well and I don't jinx myself and get everything worked out on a 454 I'm trying to get, then it really won't matter what I have now.

If you have the casting number from the rear of the block and the stamped number from the front of the block, we can figure out what it is. If it's a small journal, I want to be first in line for it.

if the Vette is a '75, and the motor is original to the car, it cant be a 327. the 327 was produced for '62-'69, '62-67 being the small journal, and 68 and 69 being large journal. also, what numbers did your cousin check to make find that it was a 327? if he just used the head numbers, that might not be accurate, considering how easy it is to swap a set of heads. the easiest way to find out is to put a cylinder at BDC and put a ruler to the top of the piston, from the piston crown to the cylinder deck will read 3.25" for a 327, and 3.5" for a 350.

Thnx for the info guys. I am not too sure which numbers he used. He had said he looked up the numbers on the engine and on the heads, so I am not sure. I will be out at his house on Sat, so I will take a look at it myself and try to get some numbers for you guys to help me out with.

Well I ended up going later than I thought, so it as too dark to see the nums. I did talk to him about it though and he says it shows it to be a ' 68 327 w/ 70 cc heads. As stated before, it is already bored 30 over and I dodn't know if honing it will be suffice or if it has to be bored again. Have to see just how bad that rust is. Kind of looks like surface rust, but am not too sure. . Don't know about the crank though. Don't think he looked that up.
