How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

And I mean the ones with with the flat bed with dovetail. I have looked around, and have found mainly only standard cabs. If you don't know what I am talking about here is an example:

I am trying to see a ball park where you live and buy one in the next year or so. It needs to be a crew cab for me to haul my friends and family, when we go wheeling. And the low profile would be great since I will be hauling a lifted suburban.

They all was custom built by a company or 2 back then now they are hard to find. You could just buy a crew cab truck and have it turned in to one it won't be cheap tho.

If you can do the work building would be your best bet. Either out of a regular crewcab or a single cab hauler... I assume it would need a boxed frame for strength.

Re: How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

That's the one thing I want to try and avoid is a huge price tag. If I built one, the bed alone would be 5k+ then we have a donor truck, new frame welded in, and then a winch and all the other stuff I would need. But at least I am seeing just how rare and expensive they can run.

That one doesn`t look to bad for the $$. Too bad insurance is like 3K a year around here, plus it would prob be overloaded and a target for getting pulled over by Cops and the DOT.

Re: How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

We call those car haulers, dovetails,or even Hodges bodies after the company that builds them. They are commonly found as Crewcabs, even more than standard from what I've seen. They are located in KY and are pretty commonly seen in the S/E being used by used car dealers and race teams.

There are other shops that build these and maybe some that have been around even longer,as well as those in other parts of the country. But,here in the East Hodges is the name most known.

Agree - Hodges is the company we used to convert our GM company owned cab chassis's into car haulers (mostly because the fleet coordinator was a big fan of them).

Incidently, the one we built to haul the race truck was a crew cab.

Re: How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

A lot of weld'n shop's build em, there real popular with dirt track guy's.
You can find several on racingjunk.com most of the time. I bought last summer that I found on CraigsList for $2500 , it needs rocker's and a front seat, but my girl freind drove about 80 miles , load'd her impala on it and drove the truck home. she it runs and drives great.
Just gotta keep your eye out and you'll find a reasonably price'd one.

Re: How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

Saw a crew cab "'88 GMC. Car Hauler, 454, 400 trans, a/c, nice inside, 10k winch car lift on back, good tires. $6500. 334-374-8271. Red Level, AL"

This is not my truck! I don't live in AL but I thought of this thread when I saw the ad. You might be able to see it online. auto-roundup.com . It was in Truck Round-Up Magazine Febuary 2012 edition page 26.

Re: How rare are the crew cab flat beds?

I have seen some like the one on ebay but that thing is rusted out. All you are buying is the bed and drive train. Hodges is the company I researched and came up with the best recommendations. But I am even going to narrow my search more cause I want a 19 or 20 foot bed. lol
