Looking at a 1960-61 C70 Firetruck and need advise

There is a 1960 or 1961 C70 fire truck in the town that I live. It has been out of service for several years. I have been trying to buy it for the last couple years and now they finally want me to make an offer. This is not a "what is it worth tread" but I am trying to figure out what is useable. I do not have any trucks this body style and I am not sure what is needed or wanted. I am mainly interested in the 348 engine and will probably part out the rest. Is there anything I should check out or see if it has? I need to turn in a bid by Sunday and trying to figure out what to look at and if there is any special options to look for. It was raining today but I will try to get pictures tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any information or advise.

Re: Looking at a 1960-61 C70 Firetruck and need advise

The hood is sought after if it's in good shape. Doors of course. Cab is usable but is not just a straight bolt on and being a fire truck has a lot of extra holes. Spotlights through the cowl? Front clip, if someone needs those wide fenders. Solid Running Boards? Dash carved for radio? Pictures would definitely help.
Options on a fire truck? Aluminum trim? Passenger Sun Visor? Tach Dash? Vacuum Gauge? Clock? Grab Assist Handle? Aluminum Grille? Cloth Seat? Sliding Rear Window? Chrome Accented Dash Knobs?

It does have spot lights but I think they are thru the a-pillar. I did notice the truck only had a drivers sunvisor. Rear window is solid and has been painted. A lot of good information and questions to answers to. I will get pictures tomorrow night. Thanks

It is not a great picture but does it look like the part you need is good? or what do you need a picture of?

WOW, I guess there is some interest. I think the shipping on the doors and hood might be a little extreme. Thanks

Before you cut it up you may want to see what it is worth as is to someone who collects fire trucks. It is in real good shape and would be cool to drive as is.

Good point and definatly an option but I had a 1946 Chevy firetruck that I tried to sell for several years and I could not even sell it for the price the scrap metal would bring.

Everybody needs to remember that this is not a WIW or For Sale Tread but just trying to get an idea what items/ options to look at so I can come up with a bid on this truck and hopefully be able to buy it. If I get the truck and decide to part it out I will list it in the clasified area on here. Thanks again for your time, knowledge and comments.

I should be able to, the truck is only a mile or so from my house. Daylight is the bigger problem. LOL

I understand when you find something you have been looking for but I just do not want me or anybody else getting in trouble in this thread because it is in the wrong area or what ever. I appreciate all the information and excitement.

What all years have this same cab? Grille? Hood? Dash if the doors are 60-63, are all these? I thought it was only 60-61. Thanks, again

Re: Looking at a 1960-61 C70 Firetruck and need advise

dash and doors are 60-63. hood is 60-61. cab is 60-62, will work on a 63 , but the front cab mounts would have to be drilled, there are some minor differences on the firewall too, 60-62 hydraulic clutch-63 not, heater is a little different than 63 as well.
grille is 61 big truck only, headlight rings are 60-61 all.

if it is still good it also looks to have the larger 25 gallon gas tank.
for novelties sake see if the original build sheet is still behind the seat...

I'd be interestered in the spotlight(s) even considerig their location ....

Although, I would consider keeping it together, restoring it for a town parade ??

In my opinion, the truck is too good to part out. It would be a great restoration project and I can just picture what it would look like restored.

Secondly, it could be converted to a great Rollback, Dump Truck, etc, even if the 348 was given up for something else and a small block or big block replaces it.

Re: Looking at a 1960-61 C70 Firetruck and need advise

Well I have turned in my bid and will find out tomorrow afternoon if I get it. I agree about the fixing up the way it sits but I have a 40 Chevy fire truck that I am supposed to be working on now and do not need another one. If I get it I will see if it sells complete and go from there. It will probably take a little while to get it to my house because they say the brakes are locked up. Thanks for all the advise, suggestions and comments.

I also found out today that is shows to have 15,981 miles on it. Even though it is a truck engine, there just can not be to many 348 engines with less than16k miles on them left out there.

Thumbs up Re: Looking at a 1960-61 C70 Firetruck and need advise

Todd,

Those 348's and 409's were bad motors as you may know.
Expensive though....
I had a buddy that had one and was gonna sell to me cheap.
Unmolested and in an Impala.
After doing research on them to have just a stock rebuild kit, machine work, after market goodies..... my wallet flew out of my pocket and smacked me across my face.
They are Torque Monsters......
They were bad to scatter though if you were hard on'em...

The 348's came in 1960 - 1963 Chevy 70, and 80-Series trucks.

I'm not 100% sure on this but if I remember correctly in the some had what they called Special Turbo-Thrust and Special Super Turbo-Thrust.
3x2 barrel's and a 4 barrel carburetors on them.
The one I was looking at was a 4 barrel.

Yea........ If I had one I couldn't leave it stock. The gearhead in me.
