decoding 1981 GMC options
I tried searching and came up with results of 67-72s only. I bought a 1981 GMC 4x4 and I want to decode the options on it. I have the glove box sticker but it only shows the codes, no descriptions. Where can I find a resource that lists the codes? Previous owner said that the truck was ordered with buckets but I'm skeptical because the seat belt retractors look like they came from the middle row of a burb.
The truck is nothing special- tilt and cruise, no a/c or pulse wipers, no tach. Only thing really interesting is the buckets. PO did claim it had posi. Has Sierra Classic fender badges but no trim on the back of the cab. It is pretty crusty, but from what I can see the cab floor is decent, only needs 1 door sill and the usual rockers and corners. PO threw in front clip, front bumper, corners and rockers. Immediate plans for the truck include new body and paint. After that will be engine, trans and gears. Possibly a 2" lift and 33s. Most of the parts going on it will be leftovers from my 2wd. It won't be anything special, just a farm truck with a fuel tank, air compressor, tool box and welder in the back. Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
That's strange how there are no descriptions printed.
YOu might try this list among others: http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/rpomenu2.htm |

Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
These are factory buckets and seat belts in my 82 that I got from a wrecked 81 or 82 if this helps. Console is LMC replacement.

Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
Thanks for the help, I'll check out the link.
I don't have pics of the seats, but they are definitely GM and are the correct high back units. It does have the correct console as well. I will have to grab some shots of them. Here's what I found so far. Still looking for some codes yet. Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
Found some more codes here - http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...olet-Truck.pdf
XXN, YXN and ZXN are codes for 10R-15B On/Off Road tires. Also found that there doesn't seem to be a code for the bucket seats. Found where the bucket seats were an option but it just showed "..." where the code should be.

Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
Understanding the GM codes a little better. Figured out that the truck was 2 tone red. 70 Carmine Red was the primary color and 71 Dark Carmine red was the secondary color. And that Doeskin was the only color available for the cloth bucket seats which this truck has. Also found that the back cab wall was carpeted on trucks with buckets, which this truck has. So it seems as though the POs story checks out regarding the buckets being ordered on this truck from the factory.

Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
Get the dealer invoice from allied vaughn. I have got them on 4 of my trucks. They have all of the options listed and the costs. No confusion there. They are available for 77 and up chevys and 76 and up gmc's. But not sure about Canadian trucks. But it is 50 bucks for each invoice.
A50 is the option number for early trucks with buckets. Later trucks like my 79 have the code AV5 for buckets. |

Re: decoding 1981 GMC options
I half thought about getting that from GM Restoration. But this truck won't be all that fancy when it's done. Probably won't spend the money on it.
Here's my updated list- although some of these I've found on other sites not necessarily devoted to squares so they might be off somewhat in description. For example the colors don't say Carmine Red or Dark Carmine Red, they list them as Red Orange. AO1 DEEP TINTED GLASS B32 MAT, FRT FLR E63 BODY EQUIPMENT,FLEETSIDE PICKUP BOX K35 CONTROL,W/RESUME,SPEED & CRUISE MX1 MERCHANDISING OPTION ONLY-DO NOT CATALOG (AUTO TRANS) N33 COLUMN,STRG(TILT TYPE) P13 CARRIER,SPA TIRE SI MT* UN3 RADIO,AM/FM STEREO CASSETTE(LESS CLOCK) V31 GUARD,FRT BPR(CHR)* V76 HOOK,FRT TOW XXN 10R-15B WHITE LETTER STEEL BELTED RADIAL (FRONT TIRES) YXN 10R-15B WHITE LETTER STEEL BELTED RADIAL (REAR TIRES) ZY5 APPEARANCE PKG,VALUE* 70L SECONDARY COLOR, EXTERIOR, RED (91) A28 WINDOW,RR WDO SLDG GLS D45 MIRROR,O/S BELOW EYELINE(STNLS STL) G80 AXLE,RR LOCKING TYPE* LS9 ENGINE, 350 C.I.D.
