How fast in your ol truck
So the other day was comin home and got bored so i wanted to see how fast my old super would go so hammered down and got the speedo to come around and touch 10 again lol. Mined you this truck has a so what stock 350 backed with a turbo 350 and 3.08 gears. Look it up online with the engine tranny and rear gears at 5300 rpm it was real close to 155 some thing like 152 mph really. Next time the front end will be new but she floated like a cadallic down the road i was surprised it didnt pull. It wasnt to concerning till i thought about it later lol
Post up what you guys have done i wanna hear the storys guys ![]()

Re: How fast in your ol truck
Not to burst your bubble, but a stock 350 is not going to push these heavy un-aerodynamic slugs to 152 MPH, something has to be off in the calculations.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I do not run top end, for sure with an old truck like these. I will be getting this truck to the track next year to see what it runs. I'm expecting good things with the power I am pushing. Yeah 152mph is hard to believe but I guess anything could be possible. I had a buddy with a a 94 sonoma 4.3L which didn't have a govoner that would top out around 135-140

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I say stock engine compared to some people on the fourms. All it is 87 350 block, mild cam, centerbolt caprice cop car heads, aluminum edelbrock intake and carb. Pretty much stock compared to the 454s and supercharged small blocks on this fourm. Dont got that kinda money for a fancy motor. Also not sayin the calculator was or wasnt correct but until i find any other proof i will use it.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
Using your vehicle Speed of 152 MPH takes 172.61 HP to overcome air drag.
Rolling resistance is 20.02 For a total of 192.64 HP to run 152 MPH ![]() |

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I dont think its just about the horsepower though, you gotta factor aerodynamics too.. The fastest I have ever gone in a vehicle was a documented 142 mph via unmanned radar checkpoint.. lol It was in my 02 mustang gt. 303 hp on a chassis dyno, lowered 2 inches on 18 inch wheels. The front end was light and my hood was vibrating like an old massage bed. I dont even wanna think about my 71 at 140, let alone 152..

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I got to 82 MPH when i saw a state pooper in my 72 GMC 2500 4x4. Luckily he wasnt shooting radar, but keep in mind shes totally stock 350 and 4 speed with granny, all original with over 228,000 miles! Not bad for an old plow truck. It was kinda scary because she was floatin all over the turnpike at those speeds.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
70 c20 350 3 speed, 8.0:1 compression with matched cam
only had it up to around 90-95 ish felt pretty solid, but with no tach and drum brakes I didn't want to push it further

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I'd like to get my truck on a drag strip someday and see what kind of 1/4 mile it would run. 330 hp 350, th350, 3:73 gears and 50,000 lbs of front axle and transfer case. It's awful quick for an old 4x4. I whupped up on some kid in a Mazda RX-8 the other day who apparently thought I was in his way. I didn't even have to floor it to keep him from passing me. That poor little dude is gonna have erectile dysfunction for the rest of his life.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I'm not sure but it looks like your running about a 30" tire. From what I figure your estimate would be pretty close in a perfect world with a manual or a lock-up convertor, but with a standard th350 the absolute best you could achieve would be 90% fluid coupling in the convertor (unlikely) so assuming a conservative convertor slippage of 85% you are looking at more like 130, which I could maybe see possible on a really long flat road with a major tail-wind.

I drive my truck to my parents all the time and have hit 85 90 MPH very often. The truck handles fine at that speed. The only problem I have is if something was to blow at that speed. I don't do it as often but as stated going up the interstate it has seen some high numbers.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
The tach & speedo jive with the calculator ....3000 on the tach is 100 mph in overdrive. (3.42 gears,.76 OD, & 29.1" tires). So how fast is my Longhorn running, when reading 15-20 mph on the 2nd trip? I never have checked that tach @ that speed(too busy watching the road!)...but my guess is a tick over 140 mph.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
That is exactly what I did with ole Pinky last year. I wasn't topped out and wasn't trying to do that but with some pedal still left my GPS said I was doing 93MPH and the speedo said 95MPH, close enough for me and the truck was real tight and riding smooth at that speed. My truck has a 396 ( and I don't know the specs) with a TH400 and 3:73's.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
By using my own simple calculator I deduce that you are running about 2100 RPM @ 60 MPH. Is this correct? If so, 5300 RPM = 150 MPH.

Re: How fast in your ol truck
I hit 90mph a few nights ago. The highway was completly empty and I wanted to see what my truck would do. When I got up to 85 my mirrors went into aerodynamics mode and folded in from the wind and the door windows started to rattle a bit but overall I was surprised at how it felt at that speed. 360hp 355, th350, 3:08
