Best water pump?

Whats the best replacement pump?

Mine just died and my buddy said it looks like the original pump which would be a miracle, so should i stick with the GM pumps or are there more reliable options?

If you want to spend a little money I've read and heard many times that Edelbrock pumps are the best. Supposed to have not only better flow, but more balanced flow and cooling. I've got 'em on a couple of vehicles, and plan to use the Eddy to upgrade every time the situation comes up. To be honest, I don't really see any difference, but I've never had anything with cooling problems initially. I am running a couple of engines with a bit more static compression now (10.3 in one and 9.6 in the other), and cooling, even during those really hot days this past summer, was no issue whatsoever. One of them is in a car kinda notorious for cooling problems (small block C3 Corvette ).

water pump is a hard thing for china to even screw up an aluminum one is lighter and most aftermarket ones give about 30% more flow just like crabass said edelbrock are a good choice, support americas market and spend a little more on americn parts not overseas napa crap

I like Stewart water pumps. The bearings and seals they use are a cut above what you find with reman pumps, the flow between the ports is balanced to deliver equal amount of water to each side of the block, and the flow rate is increased. They also have an aluminum pump but it is more expensive.

Does it matter if it is a high flow pump or is a normal OEM flowrate pump fine for close to stock engine applications. Biggest i will go with this motor is a very small compression bump and a RV cam when i do the teardown next year.

unless you pushing about 500 hp i wouldnt worry gm did a good job with thes pumps and sbc in general about 7million sbc good

A High-flow pump will Sap more power from the engine, so I wouldn't use it unless you're heavily hot-rodding it.

High flow pump isn't always the best awnser too much water through an engine and that will result in overheating. The water doesn't remain in the block long enough to absorb any heat.

I replaced the water pump in my 83 454 this past summer with an OEM GM pump. It did not cost much more than an aftermarket one - less than $38. Looked like I had original factory pump, so I went with OEM this time. On the other hand, I have replaced the water pumps on my 2 other squares with AutoZone pumps and they lasted a few years before I got rid of the trucks. I do find that every time I buy aftermarket parts they seem to be not exactly a perfect match most of the time - aftermarket suppliers seem to make "universal" parts to cover the most models with one part - I don't like that, and OEM GM/Delco parts are now about the same price (sometimes less than) aftermarket parts.
Of course, while you are at it, you should replace all hoses, belts, thermostat, pressure check radiator, etc.
