Need Vin help!!!

Trying to locate my vin on a 1979 C10 Custom Deluxe.I have looked in the obvious places, dash corner, door pillar and under hood and firewall,no dice. The engine is not original,so no help there either. Are there any hidden vin plates or identification markers anywhere else?

Re: Need Vin help!!!

Yes. On the top horizontal flange of the frame rail, midway (fore/aft about where the seat would be), and I believe it's on the driver's side.

You will need a mirror, or to remove the cab in order to see it.

Should be one on the side of the trans as well, if the trans is original.

There are none stamped elsewhere in the cab sheetmetal (not like F car, for example, where there is a secret VIN under the heater box).

Keith, the Admins should give you your own sticky on the top of this board for stuff like this. The amount of OEM info you have with your back ground is awesome. Maybe call it "Ask Keith" The 73-87 OEM Q & A Board.

Re: Need Vin help!!!

On my 79 K10 the vin is stamped on the top of the passenger side frame rail just behind the cab, about a foot or so. I was actually surprised to see it there when I pulled the bed off. Maybe yours is there too

Re: Need Vin help!!!

Another possibility is that the dash pad was replaced with an earlier version, thus covering up the VIN plate riveted to the driver side metal dash below the dash pad. I believe 79 was the year where VIN's were moved to the dash area.

I thought of that, too, but checked the LMC catalog which seemed to indicate the move didn't happen until 81 (which didn't sound right to me).

Wouldn't hurt to check that.

Yes Sir 6772fan,you were correct! There dash pad was an earlier version, although it looked like the Sahara Desert, don't know why it was replaced. Thanks for all your helpful input guys!!I am sure I will have to call upon your knowledge several times during this rebuild, when it actually starts.I appreciated it!!

Re: Need Vin help!!!

Yeah, they moved it up to the dash in 1979. My 77 has it on the door frame by the striker bolt and my 79 is up on top.
