Fuel tank craziness; can you identify this fuel tank? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 72 Chevy C10 longbed. The PO shaved the gas cap and removed the tank from the cab. He then installed 2 tanks under the bed in front of the rear tires. There is one on each side of the truck. The tanks are designed to be filled up in the wheel well of the rear tire. I wish I had pictures to show you but I don't at this time.

My question is; is this a "legitamate" fuel tank or was this custom made. And if it is a custom tank what are some things I need to look for to make sure it is safe? Also the fuel guage is not reading so I have no idea how much fuel I have. Right now I don't see any wires or anything suggesting that a fuel sending unit is connected. I'm not even sure there is a place for one as I have not dropped it yet. Any ideas on this as well?

saddle tanks were a common option back in the day. My truck had saddle tanks installed. Mine didn't have hookup for a guage. We'd just run one saddle tank till the truck started to run out of gas, switch to the second, then switch to the main tank, and fill up all of them when it got low. There was a three-way switch on the cab floor beside the driver seat.

So these are stock tanks?

Where did you fill it up at? These are designed to be filled up in the wheel well.

I've seen pics of tanks that fillup at the wheel well but never seen one out of the truck. I have a Custom Camper with a saddle tank that has the filler that comes out of the bedside. They probably are safe if they are solid. Do you have any pics of the fuel line hookup underneath the bed and cab? If you don't like these tanks you could always put a blazer tank in the back...plenty of threads in here on how to do that.

Ft. Irwin....I spent some time there, and Camp Roberts, and Hunter Ligget, and........

I have not taken any pictures of the fuel hose. Ill try and take some today.

I don't mind the tanks, now that I know they are legitimate. This was the tank that was not connected to anything, so i dropped it to get a better look at what I am working with. The other side is the same.

Eventually i would like to hook up both of them.
