Guys what do all you nut and bolt hardcore resto enthusiasts do about restoring a qjet for show quality? Replate? Im just too picky to leave mine alone and it bothers me to see it in the shape its in? And I need the finish to be durable for a lot of driving. Merry Christmas

If you're restoring a Q-Jet, I assume the truck is close to stock. In my opinion the Rochester is the best carburetor for a SBC. If you want it to perform well, you must get Cliff Ruggel's book on them. I've worked on these Carbs for decades but it was only after I read his book that I really became familiar with them. As far as getting it to look good IMO all you have to do is give it a thorough cleaning and maybe a bit of polishing with a Dremmel. There is a Rochester Re builder in Colorado that can plate and make it new again but I've never tried them. Hope this helps.

Some say that the original color is yellow bichromate and others say that it is more of the silver color. What is correct for our trucks?

Every Q-puke I've ever seen has been the diecast silver color.

The Easton Co. makes coatings and paints to match all of the original stock engine colors. Check 'em out.

The link to Sean Murphy is a good one. Check him out. For a full on restoration... it would be money well spent. As the ol' Q-jets have some issues after 45 years of service.

That is one cool lookin' Q-jet! That's definately the route I would go if I was to ever use a Q-jet again.

Okay guys... He's asking for restoration input...

The first pic by turf mcspray is what I remember new qjets looking like. If you want them done right, have an expert do it otherwise you won't be happy.

Here's my carburetor that was rebuilt by a shop in Florida. I'll have to go back and pull the receipt for the contact information if you're interested.

It could be Daytona Carb. 386-427-7108. They do a good job.

i was told by ruggles, that it is a plating method. he puts several old carbs in a tank with yours (completely disassembled) and the plating sticks to your carb...just sayin

Cliff is the Q-Jet answer man, as far as I am concerned. He sells parts, will help you over the phone.His book is a must have.
He's a very busy man, can be difficult to get ahold of, but worth the wait.
I don't care what any of my Q-Jets look like, just what they run like............

Check out the Eastwood catalog, they used to have a product that replicates the factory finnish, don't remember what its called though. Joseph

How picky are you? For the appearance? How does it currently run or is it in the process of a rebuild. Make sure you are as picky about the function as the appearance.
If you are....reaalllly picky, then don't attempt it by yourself. As the guys say send it out to the pro's, pay the dough, and that will give you the very best all around result both function and appearance wise.

Here is the last one I did. I use Eastwoods Bronze carb spray on the bowl & air horn. I use die cast aluminum paint on theb throttle body. For the linkage I use Ford green engine paint.
