Are you running the old style points ignition? If so replace your condensor. It's the small cylindrical electic component in the distributer under the rotor.

IS THE TRUCK WARM WHEN IT DOES THIS... SUCH AS GO TO THE GROCERY STORE BACK IN 5 MINUTES THEN IT WON'T START? WHAT I'M GETTIN' AT IS MINE DID SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS. NOT SURE WHAT IT WAS BUT I DID GET INTO THE HABIT OF NOT TOUCHING THE GAS ON A WARM START AND IT WOULD TURN OVER A FEW TIMES AND THEN START AND AFTER A SECOND OR TWO WOULD IDLE FINE. NEVER DID THIS COLD THOUGH. I KNOW THIS PROBABLY DOESN'T HELP BUT I THOUGHT I'D LET YOU KNOW YOUR NOT ALONE. I'VE SINCE CONVERTED THE TRUCK TO EFI AND HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THIS SO I KNOW IT WAS THAT DAMN CARB.

float may be stuck in your carb. if it's old it needs a rebuild. if it's a holley it's an easy job.

starting problem
Well,,we got it started,,,,A GOOD friend of mine helped me out,,,it was the wire that went to the coil,(we traced a wire, the wiring harness was smoking by the firewall)we just took off the tape and i found out that the red wire is spliced into 2 yellow wires,,we took off the wire on the coil,,,tried starting it a few times with the coil wire on/off and when we put the coil wire back on she ran good!! I was wondering if i burnt the points and other parts under the disributer cap though(i didn't look)also my friend said i should convert over to an electronic distrbuter so you avoid the problems of old time points, rotor, condenser, and coil,,,,did anyone ever do this???,,,to me it sounds like 1 less problem to deal with,,,,Thank You....

I think there are some good articles here about doing that.
If you're willing to drop just a little more cash, I invested in a new engine wiring harness (I think it was $75) from GMC Pauls. He can get you one already converted to HEI. These are AWESOME harnesses. Every fastener, just plug it in. Works great and saves a lot of other trouble-shooting down the road! Brian |

Changing over to an electronic ingition (HEI) is a definate improvement. You can use the search function at the top of the page and find a lot of info.

hey gmc67swb
i had a very similar problem with my truck..... turned out to be the starter.... the problem got worst in amatter of days ... i'd check the ground and all the connection to the starter and then if that doesn't work ..... replace the starter
