64 gmc 1000 305e v6

Been looking at this forum for the past year scince I bought my truck, just now getting around to joining. There is alot of very useful info on just about any subject you can think of on these pickups and some very talaneted folks doing awsome work. Just wanted to start off saying thanks for tips and ideas.
Here are some pics of the day I rolled it off the trailer after picking it up near Burnet. About 30mins and a quick trip to the parts store for a new distr cap, fresh gas, and a set of points she fired off after sitting for 6 1/2 years.

Thanks, I like the black on your ride. I am planning on going flat black in the future after a little sanding and body work. Just focusing on funtional now, putting wood down in the bed this weekend if I can find some time. I know I will probaly take some flack for going plywood route but the wood slat and rail kit cost more than I paid for the whole truck. Just need some thing so I have a bed floor, I did sand blast the cross ribs and spray them with rustame and then painted them to prevent and further rust. Did same on the lip edge on the bed.

Welcome to the forum

Looks like a good truck. There's nothing wrong with using plywood on the bed floor. Getting small projects done so you can drive it, helps keep the motivation up.

Welcome! Why not restore it to its original beauty. Here is a GMC ad, same original color "palomino tan". Great opportunity to preserve history! Looks like yours is an east coast assembly, black fender tubs, fawn firewall and I sure your door jams are fawn too.

Thanks. Looked at some of the brakets you make, those are very nice. I hope some day I can gain the patience and attention to detail you seem to have, I can build anything I sent my mind to but always seen to rush myself. Could be because I am always busy as hell. Haha Two jobs seems to cut into my fun time too much. Plus I have alot of OT right now fabbing stuff up for the SWAT team.

I am going to stay close to stock.....maybe, but the red or "palmino tan" u said has got to go, I am not a fan. Just wanted to stop the cancer now by sanding and going black, full on retso will have to wait til I build my own shop. Anything I do now up at work has to be done and backed out by the morning of the next day. Was thinking of a blue, close to the old "Marina Blue". I also picked up a 65 C30 Cab and Chasiss for the drive line cheap, might end up doing a swap and build myself a oldschool farm truck with newwer style flat bed.
Currently building a SBC to go into the truck so I can do a rebuild on the V6, my machine shop guy is chopping at the bit to work on the 305E, cuz he had one when he was a young buck. Just got the porting and polishing left on the heads and then a valve job and it should be ready.

Welcome. I am new as well, about 10 months on these boards now. GREAT place, fantastic people.

I have a '64 Chevy 1 ton C30 dually flatbed. It came with a 5 cylinder 292, blown up number 6, and no power accessories. I ended up getting a free 4,000 mike since compete rebuild 305E engien, and grafted it into the truck. I am now in the process of adding power front discs, power steering, and would love to find two things for it. A two speed rear end, and, the V6 hood emblems from someone doing a V8 coversion that doesn't want their old emblems (throw 'em my way, please, I'll give them a great home, and the great respect they deserve, right there on my hood). The guy that had the V6 I now have, THREW HIS V6 EMBLEMS IN THE TRASH before I had a chance to get them, BAD, BAD child.

These trucks are easy to work on, and fun, looks like yours will be a really nice truck.

The FM still works but the 8 track doesn't curently start when you push in the tape. My old man is going to help me with it, he sold and serviced car audio equipment back it the 70's and 80's. Just need to take it apart and see if the start up switch is broke and prolly put on a new belt. Found these cleaning out a closet at the old man's house looking for old family photos. (See 8 track tapes below)

No deal on the badges, sorry. I am planning on keeping the V6, just building the SBC305 to put in for the mean time, plus my shop foreman gave me the SBC305 for free so it was hard to refuse. Will have to take some time on the V6 because the parts are kinda high. There is a 63 GMC with the 305 for sale on San Antonio Craigslist right now, says make offer....no title though.

I was glad to see it was all intact too, truck only has 85 thousand and some change original. Belonged to a rancher out by Burnet. First gear was gone, no teeth at all left. Had my Manual Drivetrain class that I taught over the summer session at the local community college tear it down and put in a used First/Reverse gear in. Guy used to haul all kinds of stuff with it including cattle and travel trailers. That poor three speed 318muncie has seen its better days. The 3.54 posi rear end has helluva wine to it too.

No big thing on the emblems, I wasn't saying to send 'em to me. I'll find a set one day, trade for something someone else needs, it all comes around, just takes time. I think it is great that you are contemplating puitting the V6 back into the truck at a later date, not bad at all!

Man that pic of the 8 track tapes made me feel REAL old! I saw the Eddie Rabbit, Kenny Rogers and the Eagles in there and I think those were some of the first tapes that I ever had! Does it have tinted windows or is it just the pics?

Just the pics. I took a razor blade to the back window with some window cleaner(PO smoked....alot) and everyone though I had a new back glass installed.

I have a SM420(4-speed top loader) to replace the SM318(3-speed side shift) and I also have the trans hump I robbed out of the 65 C30 but I need that little 6 inch wide piece the fits up front on the floor that transitions from fire wall to bolt holes for the new floor board so I can convert my cab to floor shift and clear the bigger trans. Anybody got a parts cab that still has that piece in decent shape?

My first "stereo" was a way, way back then brand new Craig, under dash 8 track, no radio in it, just the tape.

Replaced the window regulator and door latch and lever on driver side. Got all of the heater levers and cables working and lubed up, re wired the blower motor and installed new blower switch and resitor block. And last but not least got the plywood in the bed about 70% installed today.
Ya'll got and ideas on the a filler for the gap? Seems the bed is about 8' 7/8 of an inch. I was think maybe a piece of aluminum?

Wouldn't it be nice to install some sort of hidden lift system for the bed, to allow it to tilt as well.

That would be nice, helped a guy build a lift bed for his hunting truck that doubled a deer stand.

Thanks, yeah I did them myself. Still got three intake bowls to reshape before I drop them off at the machine shop, thats some where on my to do list.

Got some more done over the long weekend. Put on some new pipes, finished bolting all of the bed up and found a nice trim piece to fill my 7/8" gap that was left in between the two sheets of 3/4" ply wood. I also took a scrap piece of angle and cut some saddels in it and fitted it on the frame under where the two peices meet to sure up the center of the bed.

Here are some pics of the trim piece installed and the bed done. After searching all over central Texas for a good T-5 tranny I was talking to my foreman and he like "I got one of those in my shop at the house". I didn't know whether to hug him or punch him in the face. So I did neither, but he sold me a 1993 T-5 that came behind the 2.8L wich seems to be the last year for the old GM bolt pattern. Got it for $100, came out of a wrecked truck and only has 64,000 original miles on it and all feels tight. Being it is a 93 and came with tranny fluid in it that makes it a WC right?

Be very careful with that particular T5. Those transmissions are strength rated for the torque they can handle, and, the V6's, the 60 degree ones, used ones that will not hold up to much torque. The internal ratio s also change between the torque loadings, ones that are later model "World Class" are the toughest, for the 350 V8's only, everything else is simply suicide if used behind a torque monster like the big block 305 and larger V6's.

Be very careful with that small V6 trans, It WILL grenade easier than I believe you are ready for.
