what size tires for 17x8 rim??
hey guys,
I'm about to order some new wheels for my truck soon and Im going with a 17x8 TT2. I would like to know what size tires and backspacing would work for my setup. I have a set of 2600 dominator bags, c notched, 2 inch drop blocks, and a set of 5 lug axles in the factory rear end in back and I will have a set of disk brakes from a 73-87, drop spindles, and drop springs in front. this is a SWB truck. and i HAVE used the search function with not much luck at all. any help would be greatly appreciated and pictures would be icing on the cake. Thanks guys!!!! P.S. the fender lips in back were rolled in from the PO, i will be rolling them back out to put the strength back in the bedsides. the sides loose alot of strength with the lips rolled in and get floppy. |

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
All I know is that 275's will be to wide. I would guess around 255 would be a good width.

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
I saw this truck at C10 Kings Get Together this year. He had 17" wheels all around, 8" front & 9.5" rear. He was running 255/50s front and 275/50s rear.

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
I've got 255/55's on 17x8's on the rear, and 235/55's on 17x7's on the front. Both seem to fit very nice (my 66 is currently "in process"). I mocked everything up about a month ago and the rear tires fit with about 1 to 1.5 inches clear on either side of the tire. There's plenty of room in the front.

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
Im running 6-lug TT/ST's in 18'' on my '64. I have 275/40/18's all around which have a diameter of roughly 26.5''. They fit no problem. The backspace on my rims is 5.25'' and fits in the rear but hit the tubs in the bed. The centerbore is too small to fit over the axle hub in the rear but I used a .25'' spacer to clear.
The backspace works well in front with 5.5'' of drop and no rubs and about 1.25'' clearance above the tire to the inner fender. You may have to get 2 different backspacings front/rear to get perfect fitment on the truck, especially once you have disc's up front. Thought this info mite help as it's close to what you are considering.

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
The setup I am running is AM Racing Hopster, 17x8, 5x5, 4in backspacing, -11mm offset, tires are hankook ventus, fronts are 225/50r17, rears are 275/55r17. My truck is a short bed fleetside with a 3.5/5 drop, the rear tires are tucked far enough into the wheel wells that the truck has to be jacked up by the frame so the axle will drop down in order to get the wheel/tire out, they are really tight in the wheel wells, they don't rub, but it's really close.

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
protrash: thanks for the info! from what you stated, i would need to order rims closer to ~4" backspacing instead of 5.25 to get the rims farther away from the tubs. thats good to know!
Baby blue 66: first off, that is one fine looking machine you got there. love the truck. I think I am going to follow your lead and order the rims with 4" backspacing and the sizes you recommended. Do the back tires ever rub if youre going up an incline at an angle, like when the axle is farther up on one side than the other (make sense?)? |

Re: what size tires for 17x8 rim??
Thats based on a 6-lug early axle, not the 70+ axles that were wider. FYI.
