Worth it?
Hi guys, I had been over on the 47-59 forum but then sold my 56 over a year ago. Anyway, been trying to sell a boat when a guy puts up the offer for a possible trade for a 66 bbw. Already has 3/5 drop, all new suspension, disc brakes. Runs good but has a rear seal leak and possible bad bearing.
Bed is decent with new stainless and oak. Cab is another story. Needs floors, rockers, supports. Drivers door toasted passenger not too bad. rust thru above windshield. My boat is worth 9-10k. My options are boat and have the rust repair done by him. (the truck is actually in a vintage resto-shop... guy does very good work). Or take the truck and some $$$. I sold my welders but do have access to a mig. It is a #'s matching NC truck.

Re: Worth it?
IMHO I think you would be better off selling your boat for the 10k and buying a nice completed truck

Re: Worth it?
Going to be alot of time and money to get the cab right. What kind of shape is the body in under the paint would be my big concern. Ive been in NC on and off since 1988 and haven't found a whole lot of real solid trucks body wise, mostly due to all the farming/agriclulture and rain/snow seasons. In my opinion Id say the 1966 is around $3000-3500 if it has a solid body. I see plenty of trucks that are rust free out west for the same price or lower and you dont have to do all the cab repair.

Re: Worth it?
Well my thought is to have the owner have all the rust repair done by the resto shop. They share the building. So if I get all the rust repaired it may wwell be worth it.
Yes I do need to get rid of the boat as I have another one and don't want to keep paying 2 dock fees. Wife and I would rather have a truck and boat compared to 2 boats. This way I get a truck (the only series I haven't worked on extensively) and probably have a better chance of selling later on down the road.

Re: Worth it?
sounds like its a good barter for you then maybe - though I would negotiate it as all rust repairs done and a couple grand cash since motor needs reowrked and as said above even with a solid body these trucks arent much over half the value of what your boat is claimed to be - Im factoring in the upgraded suspension etc in the 5k range

Re: Worth it?
it all depends to on what kind of rust repair work that they are going to do. if the eng has a brg problem that really means that it is only worth scrap for the shape thaf it is in. sounds away to iffy for me. i would run away from that. just ask yourself this question; what if your not happy with the body work, what then. it could get very complicated
what is meant by new suspension; like brand new or new as out off a newer model truck(73-87) so lets say without motor (which is doubtful) and no body work done; would you pay $1,000,00 for it. I doubt it ron |

Re: Worth it?
Im in sanford NC and I justed looked at the ad. I would have a hard time giving him even close to 4000 dollars for that truck. I have seen almost perfect restored trucks in our area for around 10-12K range. Looks like he has bolted on a lot of new stuff but im not seeing 8K in that truck plus the motor being bad on top of that, but the motor looks good. I would have to pass on that deal unless he cuts the price in half, just my .02

Re: Worth it?
Thanks for the replies. I'm still up in the air. Understand that the boat is a depreciating asset whereas the truck will probably hold or increase in value over time. I have been offered 7k for the boat but they never showed up with cash...posers! here's my ad:
http://charlotte.craigslist.org/boa/2716087240.html Yes that is the truck on cl. If the body work is not up to my liking then the deal is off. I want all the rust repaired. Again the shop does very good work I mean excellent. I've done this enough to know good work. I just don't want to do a lot of it myself. Here's the link to the shop: http://vintagerestoration.net/index.html. The suspension is all new CPP stuff. 6lug disc, springs, spindles, tie rods, sway, all of it front and rear. I've seen the parts to be used for repair... doors, hood, cab eyebrow, etc... Good stuff. As for the motor, Just one bearing on one journal. Pull it out the bottom and turn for new. My boat engine needs valve seals, just started that this fall. dried out from lack of use because of the new boat. LOL. so I took that as a wash. You guys are right, I would no way spend that money on this truck if I was looking for a truck. But since I don't need 2 boats and if I can get all the rust repaired this might be a better way to go. Do I think it's going to happen? Probably not. But I have hopes. And if I don't go through with it the owner was going to have it done anyway so he's not not going to be out out anything either but his cash. Thanks I'll let you know what happens.

Re: Worth it?
The truck isnt bad to start if you can deal with the issues; thats always the wild card with these things. If the cab was fixed, you'd still have the engine thats an unknown. If its replaced with a lo-po crate youre still looking at 1500 bucks on top of your boat. Tough call; but NO WAY I'd pay 8k for that truck; no way!

Re: Worth it?
really? Not trying to be assy.. Troutman is local to me and that is kind of high for condition - this area. I'm a bit surprised it sold already. Sorry it did not work out for you.

Re: Worth it?
He emailed me this morning and he took a cash offer from a guy in WV. When I was looking at it he "said" he had an offer for $6500. Said he paid $3400 for it and had receipts for 13k.
Hey, more power to him. After all it is Barrett-Jackson time. I think he and his resto guy talked after I looked at it again. He knew I wanted all the body work done. Besides cash talks. Now if those clowns who made me imaginary offers on my boat showed up with cash, we wouldn't be having this conversation.LOL. Maybe the buyer needs a boat too!
