64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
Been trolling the forums for a few months now. Lots of great info and pics so I finally registered.
A few questions about my 64 GMC 930 stepside with 9 foot box, 283 4 speed granny tranny and 5:14 rear, rear leaf springs, dump box: 1. hard to find info on the 1 tons. are the suspension parts the same as the 3/4 tons? 2. if not, does that mean the aftermarket drop spindles front disc brake conversions wouldn't work? 3. where can I find parts for the 9 foot box I currently have an edelbrock performer manifold and 600cfm carb that I will be putting on and a HEI distributor to replace the points. I have procrastinated on these for now as the truck runs so good with the stock setup right now. Would like to add disc brakes up front and pwr brakes and steering. Would like to get it to the point where I could drive it daily ( got to address tranny/axle set up for highway driving eventually) Any Saskatchewan members out there? will post pictures once i figure out how. |

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
I am not sure about sourcing parts for the 1 ton's but have you tried Jolly's website? www.6066gmcguy.org
They might give you a little flack for not having a V-6 in there but if you are trying to get info for suspension related stuff, they might be able to help you out as I am sure there will be some guys on here that know about the 1 tons. Good luck!

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
With the exception of the bedsides, I would think that most of the stepside parts are interchangeable.

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
Thanks guys. I checked out the link to 6066 gmc guy. One thing I forgot to mention is that it is a Canadian GMC truck 3604. I believe the CDN GMC trucks used Chev drive trains but GMC bodies and trim. Not sure about suspensions though.
1963 C-10 I think you are correct about most parts being the same for the beds ( fenders, tailgates, etc.) I was wondering when to get the bed wood kits. Any idea?

Sorry, not "when" to get the bed kits, but where?

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
You might be hard pressed to find a kit for a 9Ft. bed. The board profiles are easy to fabricate with a table saw. It does take some patience and time to do it yourself however. I'd contact some vendors to see if they could do something for you.

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
I have the router dimensions for the wood if you decide to have it made or do it yourself. A= 3/4" (board thickness) B=1/4" C=1/4" D=1/2" E=1/8" This is for the routered edge, would just mirror image to do 2 sided board

I would try Mar-k. If they do not sell them you can give them the measurements and they will make then for you.

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
I would think a 73-91 1Ton front suspension would work just fine on your 64, you might take some measurements on the rear and see if the same years would work for that.

Now I do not know whether or not the 88-91 frt ends will work or not. the 1/2 t were good from 73-87 and only suburbans and crewcabs to 91 Jollies crew will not give you a bad time just as long as you don't harangue their beloved V6. Canadian models are 930 while the US models are just 30 series ron |

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
As far as a C-30 being different from other truck, if it is a dually it is alot narrower than the ones most folks are used to. This 65 I picked up fit on my 20ft trailer(wich would never be possible with one today), and with some minor fender/fender well work could problay have a normal fleetside bed dropped down over the duals. It also has king pin like bushings instead of spring eye bushings, if you look real close in the pick you can see the grease inserts on the spring eyes. Bottom right of second pic. Rear end is also third member style but also has a rear diff cover as well. Differences my only be on the cab & chassis models.

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
You can change your truck over to front disc brakes, by using parts from a '73-'87 C20 or C30. The one difference is that you can't install the lower control arms onto your original crossmember. You will have to either change the crossmember and all, or just change the ball joints and install the disc brake spindles, rotors, calipers. etc.
I would change that Eaton HO72 for a 14 bolt or a Dana 60.

Re: 64 gmc 1 ton stepside questions
Thanks guys, this is all great info.
My truck is a single wheel 1 ton stepside. I have the Eaton H072 also, which I will switch out once I find a good donor with better gears. 5.14 and granny tranny. not great on the highway. pwr disc brakes up front has got to be the first project. We've got a couple of those old chevy duallies out at the farm as grain trucks. Oh, so many possilbilities. Going to focus on the 64 stepside and then next the 67 1 ton stepside. Gotta love the extra long steppers. My wife is going to kill me
