Vin plate
Has anyone been through the process of getting a new vin plate from the state? (Texas)
Owned the 72 since it was new so history is not an issue. Body shop pulled tag off the door area and we're not sure where it went. Thinking of the alternative to not being able to find it. Frame has been blasted and powder coated so not sure I could find a frame stamp even If I find out where it should be. The motor is a crate engine so can't really go off that either.

If you have supporting paperwork (titles/registration etc.), it shouldnt be a problem having a repro one made. Most state DMV's have a form for Police/agent inspection of the vehicle (frame/engine/chassis VIN check) with their sign-offs. You then typically send this filled out & approved form to that state's DMV HQs for them to assign you a "State-issued replacement VIN tag". This tag looks nothing like the original tag, it only serves to allow registering & driving the vehicle. A better alternative is to send the paperwork and form to one of the few services that can/will reproduce a tag looking much closer to original. Sometimes folks get their panties in a wad when these discussions come up, but that's mostly due to all the mis-information & lack of knowledge floating around about the issue.
