Fuel gauge
Has anyone had a problem with the fuel gauge going past the full side? I thought a blown fuse would cause a problem like this.Any suggestions?
Thanks, Dan |

actually the problem is probably a bad ground on that tank's sender.

What about one that only goes to about 3/4 when the tank is actually full?

One that only goes to 3/4 when full, would leave me to believe it is a bad sender. The senders that I know (things may of changed on the newer stuff) went off from resistance. Kind of like how a light dimmer switch works. It has a row of coils and then a slide bar on it. Depending on where that slide sits on the coils, will determine how much resistance is there and the gauge will move to a certain point. If something has gone wrong with that set of coils or if the slide bar goes up so far and then gets stuck for some reason, it would only read 3/4 full.
Now this is assuming that the gauge still works once the tank gets below 3/4 full. As in the gauge still goes to the half, quarter, and empty marks.

One thing Chevy got wrong on our trucks is the gas gauge. It stays at full until it gets at 3/4 tank. No inbetween. Then once it gets to 1/4, it gets really sensitive. I was at the gas station and added two gallons and it regestered like I had put in 1/4 tank! You have to get used to these gauges to know how much gas you have.

Oh I get it! - When you fill the tank all the way, that is normal.

I always have a bad day. Does the gauge no longer come off from the far right side? Still sounds like probably a ground problem. Or a short in the sending unit.

Rockman, Now I think we are on the same page.
The needle is stuck pass the full mark. I will look for a bad ground. Then I will look for a short. Thanks again, Dan |

i had something similar happen to me, didnt happen long, filled up with gas and holy cow it was reading like 1/4 of a tank past full. now, 3/8s of a tank is full.. not sure what the deal is, but not really looking forward to dropping the tank to check it.
