Electrical question

I have a question that has to do with electrical work I'm trying to get done on my 76 c20 350/350. So, I had posted previously about HID's and about an engine harness I had to purchase and did. Now I had gone to the junk yard to get the bulkhead to the fuse box at the firewall on the engine bay side. As I was looking I had noticed it was looking fried from the short that created the harness to melt for lights and engine harness. I got a newer used one from another 76 at the yard and now I'm puzzled on how im going to plce the new harness pig tails into the bulkhead. It has this black gunk aroung the base of the bulkhead and the wires. Im not sure what this stuff is but figure it is for some sort of water proofing or making a barrier to prevent water from coming through. I also noticed grease on the other side which I'm sure is needed for this electrical work. What is this harder stuff and where do I get it? How do I remove it in order to get a clean area to replace the stuff? Iff anyone knows where I can puchase a new one that would be great too? I really don't know what the correct name is to this part either. It has stumped people.

Not sure what the gunk is, but brake clean will dissolve it. To get the wires out, you can use a tiny screw driver to bend a tab back on the terminal which will let it come out. I just used some yellow all purpose grease in the holes when I reassembled it. Not politically correct but it serves the purpose of keeping water out just fine. Been a long time since I had to mess with it but that's it in a nutshell.

Awhile back I had intended to do a write up on how to swap to a newer wiper setup and messing with the firewall bulkhead happens to be part of it...ended up getting busy and never wrote it but I did take plenty of pics.

In the pic I'm using the small screw driver to press on the terminal to get it to come out.

Yes , yes this looks just like it. See the stuff I circled is like crunchy and feels like something that may have been put there from the factory because I have it on mine too but was afraid that maybe it was no good because of my close call with an almost fire. It feels rubber like but weathered and cracked if you will. I'm not sure but the two truck at the yard both had this too but mine sure didshow resulting damage from the short. Do you jnow where I can get just this part new? Thanks so much for the reply. My brother and I are going to tackle this this coming week.

Thanks Motornut! Anything at this point helps. BTW I hate electrical lol it sucks. Still would feel better getting a new bulkhead but no one seems to either know or it comes with a whole kit which I don't need. Unfortunately it doesn't come with the headlights and engine harness side. Thanks again for the reply!
