? on my IR compressor
I hve a IR ss5l5 5 HP, 18.1 CFM @ 90 PSI, 230 Volt compressor but it seems to be lacking power and is only couple yrs old now (bought new) and done oil changed etc and drain tan reg bases. Just seems it does not run my die grinder,1/2 impact etc like it should for it size. The compressor is in another building and plumbed in to gauge etc about 50 foot black pipe think 3/4 size would have to measure again. So any ideas what to do? most my tools are matco and use low cfms so what gives? I need some help fellows!!!! Thanks Brandon

Re: ? on my IR compressor
What does the pressure gauge on the tank read? Do you have regulator on it? What does it read? Is it possible to disconnect the hard line from the compressor and hook up a short hose and try a tool?

Re: ? on my IR compressor
Do a pump up test. This will tell the condition of the machine.
1. Isolate and drain the receiver at the valve, You need a known volume for this to be accurate. 2. Start the pump and time how long it takes to fill to 90 psi. You can then calculate the delivery of the compressor. Or post up your time Last edited by RanchFlyer; 01-29-2012 at 11:06 PM. Reason: change psi |

Re: ? on my IR compressor
I thought more about your problem. Is there a hose between the compressor and the hard line? If there isn't there should be to keep vibration out of the piping. If there is what size is it and what type of connection are on it? Also as asked above is it regulated at the machine or point of use?

Re: ? on my IR compressor
ok drained tank tonight completely! Took 2 mins and 20 seconds to reach 90 psi and total of 3 min and 42 to fill totally up and kick compressor off. Do not have a regulator on it at all always seem to find crappy ones even the ones around $80 sucked it seemed. 1/2 whip line (big hydro line crimped with special fitting) coming off compressor to hard line through the garage. Tank reads 120 to 122 when kicks off. So hopefully I can get more repsonses now that I have given some more info. Brandon

Re: ? on my IR compressor
Brandon That is roughly 14 cfm pump up at the top end. So I would be willing to say the compressor has a clean bill of health. I based this at 125 Psi shut off. That is the reason it is a little lower than the factory rating. A 1/2" hydraulic hose with hydraulic 1/2" fittings is great. I would suggest opening that black iron pipe and looking for a blockage. It doesn't take much scale to clog up generic quick couplers. ARO and speed-air both make quality regulators, If you find rust a piggy back filter regulator may be a solution.

Re: ? on my IR compressor
I had a husky compressor did the same thing! Replaced the air filter and removed and cleaned the pressure switch on top of tank. Helped a ton but already bought a new one and regret not doing it earlier. American industrial and their local..
