Ram Assist from 68 K10

I pulled this from a 68 4x4, but there were plugs in the ram assist. I believe this to be the rare power steering, but not sure. It does NOT come with the steering box and pitman as it looks like a normal one anyway. $33 shipped.
Thanks,
Ray

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

Must have been aftermarket unless they redesigned specifically for early 68 which I doubt. Look here for pics of the 67 setup: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=427573

I figured it was worth a shot even if it was aftermarket...I had checked all the threads on here about the 4wd ram assist and it didn't look like the factory setups I'd seen...

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

That thing is pretty interesting, there's no ram on it so I don't think it's a power assist, but I'm really curious what it is!

It appears to be the valve that senses steering load and then diverts flow to the appropriate side of the assist ram. Was there an assist cylinder on the truck Ray? Even though its probably aftermarket, I bet the principle is the same. Check out the link I posted.

I didn't see any other power steering related parts on this truck. This truck was so incomplete and gutted that I didn't bother with a part out thread. I like the idea on the valving as it would sense which direction to move the ram assist.

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

You are probably right, it just seemed too simplistic of a design to incorporate the appropriate internal valving needed. The ones on my 67 pickups look similar to the link you posted except they are oriented inline with the centerlink for a 2wd.

Either way I think it's cool!

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

Yeah, I thought it looked almost too simple as well but I can't figure out why else there would be 4 ports on there.

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

That's a strange piece! Ram assists are generally parallel to the tierod, that piece is IN the drag link! Strange.

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

The more I think about it, the more I think it wouldn't work as an assist there. If it changed length any at all while turning the wheels it would just make them turn quicker that the steering wheel was turned. Almost has to be a damper or something? I don't know what it is, just throwing it out there.

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

This would be the control unit, not the ram part that you are thinking about

Re: Ram Assist from 68 K10

You're probably right, I just reread some other posts that said that. I just always thought they were all one piece. Must be a 4x4 thing.
