Ooooo that smell ...

I finally finished pulling the 3sp OD trans out of my 69 parts truck today. I forgot what a huge hassle it is yanking greasy old stuff out of a truck when you are laying on a dirt, gravel, hay and a bird poop encrusted floor lol.

Like a dope I pulled the rear drive line, and the front one. Should have left the front one in, because the trans was dripping a little out of the tail shaft. Well I wasn't paying attention and the drip became a stream. I was dragging my large body around on my back and was trying to get a little leverage on a wrench and I turned the left side of my head directly under the tranny oil stream. Ugh, what a mess and boy does that stuff stink.

Hopped in the shower when I got home, and did the rinse lather repeat with the ol shampoo three times and I can still smell that stuff, blech.

Someone tell me why we work on old trucks again???

Whew, boyyyy. That's a stank that's hard to get rid of. Prepare yourself to sleep alone for a while.
And I used to enjoy tearing into old stuff like that. I didn't mind the smell or stains back then.

Nothing like the smell (and staying power) of 40+ years old 90W.

Dr.Bonner's Miracle soap.I like the pepermint.I use it all the time.I don't know if it takes the smell away or just covers it up,but it don't smell like pepermint after I shower.
BTW careful getting it in sensitive spots,it may tingle.

Re: Ooooo that smell ...

i had a bottle one time in the bed of my truck and was hauling a t400 across town for a buddy and went around a corner and that new bottle lost the battle between the bedside and that trans. never saw a skunk try to cross the road for a month, it was that bad. my buddies just about passed out when they walked pass my truck. i like working on trucks just for the busted knuckles and it gives me a reason to let out frustration, except for when it creates frustration.

Re: Ooooo that smell ...

Memories....

I was a wee young lad, and Dad had an old 4-wheel drive Kaiser Jeep. He'd come in from the garage with that gear lube on his coveralls. You never forget that stank!

Spent the last 30 years crawling on, under, and around my various 69-72's. People say "Why don't you get a newer truck?" and I reply "Just went from a 71 to a 72"

Some people don't understand it's a labor of love, or the love of labor.

Rancid 90 weight...PEE---U!! Maybe that's what Elvis put in his hair...ya think? It'll sure hang with ya in your hair or on your clothes. I think we work on stuff for the go through hell just to end up at the other end satisfaction. Self deprivation, then reward. It's the same as why people hike all day long to end up at a beautiful place others will never see without that effort. Dr Bonner's peppermint is the shtuff alright. You can shampoo and all with it...wash anything. And,yeah,it'll tingle.

Re: Ooooo that smell ...

In the last year, at work, we have dealt with 2 or 3 excavator final drives that the 90w was actually burnt. Nastiest smell around. We pulled the drain plug on one, sitting outside our shop, and within 20 minutes had people from the office ( 1/2 block away ) calling the shop to see if we smelled the "gas leak".

Drained the final and let it drip in a drain pan ,,, 2 business's called in "a natural gas leak ",,, from 2 blocks away that night and we had the fire department and DNR looking for the "gas leak ".

When working with the burnt 90w,, if I get any on me,,,,my clothes come off in the garage.

Try falling head first into a wall filled with wet expanding foam insulation sometime! You can't shampoo that crap our of your hair! You have to sit outside while your wife try's to crumble the hardened foam out of your hair! Do that once and gear oil will seem like a spa treatment!

That would be a good reason to pull the clippers out for a new haircut, an extra short one! Mel
