Grant steering wheel install info
Do I use the long spring or the short one? Read the directions and it says the long one. Just seems like short one would work better.?!

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Thank you
Saw one of those links before Was looking for what spring to use in the grant hub itself not the column spring. I'm just gonna try em both in the morning and see what works best. |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Ok still need help.
Got everything all hooked up and new wheel on and the damn horn wont stop blowing. Stripped it down piece by piece and it didn't stop till I pulled the Grant hub back off with a puller. So what now? I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing I just don't know what. Help! |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Ok....figured it out and it works. Horn blows and stops blowing when I want it too.
So I have another question. After all of my thread searches on this site and others I found that this is kind of a common problem. So, I've decided to document it on this site step by step, pic by pic, removal of old wheel to install of new wheel so that it might benefit someone else with same problem. My question is should I start a new thread or just run it in this one? Feel I owe something to the forum for all it and its member have done for me. Let me know. Thanks |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
First off the only reason I am changing the wheel is for comfort. Just like the smaller wheel with thicker grip. <--Don't go thinking weird on me. My horn hasn't worked since previous owner and figured out why. Here are the steps that I took to remove my old wheel and install a Grant #457 (with a "signature series" horn button) and a Grant #3163 installation kit. Hope this might make some things easier for ya if you never done it before.

Pic 11: new Grant contact wire Pic 12: seperate Grant wire and remove middle plastic spacer. you don't need this spacer. remove long spring and reuse stock small spring. |

Pic 13: Grant contact wire seperated
Pic 14: seperate stock canceling cam from horn contact kit Pic 15: this is where i got screwed up. note the budweiser cardboard in the middle. very custom! i had to use this to keep the horn from blowing nonstop. if you don't use this as soon as you push the Grant hub (top) with canceling cam (bottom) onto the column shaft the horn will blow. this worked best for me. |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Pic 19: install rest of Grant wire assembly and use tape to hold in place. i used painters masking tape because it was close and stuck good.
Pic 20: install hub cover and put column nut on to hold in place. Pic 21: this is where it will probably get different for different styles of wheels. my new wheel uses this mounting bracket to mount the column to wheel instead of directly to hub cover. second installed wire is for back of "signature series" horn buttons only. column wire goes to center of the back of horn button and second wire on mounting bracket goes to outboard of horn button. |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Pic 22: new wheel installed and blows like a champ. still like the looks of my old wheel but this one feels better and i feel will drive better for me.
Pic 23: basic Grant instructions Pic 24: back of Grant instructions. do everything this says except for using the long spring. there is no need for the long spring the stock small spring does the job perfectly. |

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
RRR, that's the wheel I just installed. Haven't checked the horn yet. Wiring is a mess. It is a comfortable wheel though!

So that's all I got. Hope that this will help somebody someday if they need it. I'm sure I did something a little different than others have....but this worked for me.

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
I for one, thank you RRR! After fudging the end of the shaft with a makeshift puller 3weeks ago, getting nowhere with the threads last weekend, and ordering a thread fixing tool, I got it all together today just to have the horn do its thing whenever it wanted. I'm no pro at fixing stuff so guys like you really save guys like me

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Ha! Got her done!! All hail the Budweiser gasket I also had to use a punch on the horn button to get enough bite on the "fiber" orange horn actuator.
Posted via Mobile Device BTW- your gauges look awesome RRR!

Re: Grant steering wheel install info
Thanks for going through the trouble of posting instructions RRR18 but one thing I will suggest to add to your instructions:
Step one - disconnect battery Last step - reconnect battery and test
