i noticed after watching El Mariachi that the 81/82 chev in the movie has a 73-87 box, however the tailgate is flat, chains on like a stepside, and has taillights similar to the 67-72 box. i assumed this must be a custom job at first, but then i stumbled upson a commercial for mexican GM trucks and seen the same tailgate, taillights, and chrome bar as on the movie truck. i was wondering if anyone has any pictures of info on these trucks.

I've seen both styles down there....the one with the 73-87 square tail lights, and the on with the 67-72 style tail lights.

Noting that those adds are for 1988. Same steering wheel I put on mine. I must be half way to Mexico

What would be real intersting is to find out which GM plant they were produced.

I don't kno the exact details, but I do kno that reg cab squares were made all the way up to 91 in Mexico. There was a guy on this forum selling a Mexican Cheyenne that had the 89-91 suburban front end standard. Instead of saying mph it had kmh on the gauges. It had the factory buckets like in the advertisement.

I know they had Brazilian squares the same way too. Built for quite awhile after the American market went to the NBS. I wish I had some more detailed information. Im hoping someone chimes in to give some more info on these trucks.

The Brazilian squares were even odder. They were intended to resemble a large S10 but wound up looking more like a Ford F-series of the same generation. The only way to identify this as a sibling to our square trucks is by the shape of the windows and upper cab lines.

Looks like its got a tach and the fuel door behind the right rear wheel.

FYI, If you can get a GM part number for any of the parts you want, you can go down to the local dealer (with the number) and order Mexican parts. Of course if they are still available...lol. The parts are stocked in the US and are available within a couple days. Just don't tell the dealer whats up, just tell them you need XXXXXXX number part. I think the warehouse is in the southeast US (where ever the BIG GM wharehouse is down there), but can't remember for sure...

I did this for a 99 S10 that I had. I liked the Mexican Tailights better, so I found a part number and ordered the parts...

The hard part, yes VERY hard part is getting the part numbers. It may help if you speak Spanish (or at least have a friend that does), I didn't and it took awhile to get the numbers. But once I did, I had the parts in 3 days.

How /where would you go to find the parts number? A website or a diagram maybe?

Did anyone else notice the 'round' gas hole and the locking gas caps, even on the 88? Does this mean these are 'REGULAR' fuel trucks? If you remember GM (in the US) used round vs square gas hole to tell the differance between reg and unleaded truck in 78.

I wonder why the back of the beds look different. There had to be some reason for them to make it flat like that and use different lights.

Many regions require a certain amount of domestic content. Could be that the trucks made in Mexico had to have xx% of parts produced locally.

Or - just product differentiation, so that they would look different than the stateside version.

Unleaded gas started to be mandatory around the time cats were introduced (1975). 1979 was the first year of the square fuel doors so I doubt these two things are related.

i dont know about mexican square but south american square are very differents as shown above they range from haft ton to 2.5 ton with diesel perkin motor.in foreing country they seem to keep modele generation longer than in north america. when there i saw dodge and ford 72 and earlier generation beeing produce till late 70s. maybe thats why they kept the earlier version of tailight on mexican...american square 73-87 were imported in S-america
