Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
How tough is it to do? Has anyone tried it (I'm sure they have ..) ?
What all would I need to do it? The GMC I just bought has a decent bed floor in it but I wish it was a wood floor. It has a couple rust holes in it how but just to get an idea what I'd be up against .. ? I think I would need the braces, etc .. and of course the wood kit. I was hoping I could find a decent SWB wood floor maybe someone was replacing the wood for new? I could just buy and refinish to driver specs .. Your thoughts please? thanks.

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
I think you will never get your other truck done unless you just lower and throw a set of wheels on this truck and just drive it untill your other truck is done

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
Tim, you're probably right .. but I won't have a lot of cash to do anything to the GMC right away anyway. The 68 is first, the GMC is just a driver. I'm just curious more than anything ..

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
You would need front bed panel 3-center cross sills 1-rear cross sills and a couple of reinforcement strips then your wood, bed strips and bolts

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
I'm planning on doing this to my long bed. Where might I start looking for the parts that I need besides the wood? Or would junk yards be a good place to start?
Thanks, Ryan |

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
I just saw an episode of Stacy David's Gearz. He was working on the "knuckle buster" a 73 short bed. Had a metal floor and he found a kit (not sure which one) that came with supports, metal strips, wood, and bolts. Bolted it all together, it looked like a wood floor but metal underneath (hauling engine etc.... not wanting to mess up wood) The wood kit also came out in 3 pieces. Had the wood for looks and metal for hauling and durability.

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
Here's that episode of Gearz that D-man313 is talking about where Stacey David installs a removable wood bed over the metal bed.

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
Hey Chad -
I think the Stacey David wood bed is a great idea. Remember, you are going to use this truck for a DRIVER. If you need to haul truck parts or engines you could just remove the nice wooden bed, and not worry about scratching it. Plus it looks like it is fairly straightforward (easy) to do. I like it! Did you see the prices? I know what you mean and it's not something we really have to do (at all) , but if I can find good OEM parts or someone who's taking out their old stuff to replace with new show quality wood (?) Something like that. .. I don't want it to be perfect but not sure I want to put $1k into it either .. That's what will be fun about this truck. No rush at all, it's running and driving like it is. We can just blast and clean that bed up for now if you want? Just see what we have to work with. ..

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
WOW... I didn't see the prices. I thought it would be cheaper than a wood bet kit from LMC or Brothers! That's too much $$$ for a driver truck.

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
An older post - but I'm glad it helped someone else out.
I did in fact do the conversion but I have since sold the truck. It went ok for my first one, but the next one will be better. I learned a lot .. I got the wood from a local sawmill, rough cut and Pop and I planed it down, cut it to spec, etc. It wasn't difficult just time consuming, and if you have the tools you can do it pretty cheap.

Re: Metal bed floor - conversion to wood floor
I'm a woodworker in my "spare time"/side job, and a die hard Texan' all the time. I'm looking to do a custom bed that I have yet to see. I need the board width and grove dimensions listed in the link above. I'm glad you shared the info. It will be a while before you see it. I have to shorten my frame and replace the bed sides. I know they can be cut down, but they have far too much work that needs to be done. So I'll be getting new ones.
