Why buy something when you can build it for twice the price..

Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done...

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

Nice GMC. Put some different rims and mirrors on it and drive it!
Oh, and some 3/4" plywood for the bed.

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

i might be towing my boat to the lake with it and i think i may have to do some brakework on it, does everybody convert to disc brakes or is it fine for me to just rebuild my drums?.

just curious why replacing the bed is so important..? right now the bed seems solid, steel diamond plating..

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

You can get by on drums, you just have to remember to drive at 1960s speeds and leave plenty of room for braking.

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

Drums are fine for driving, but I sure wouldn't want to tow anything of any weight with them. If a car with 2010 brakes slams them on in front of you, and your towing with 4 wheel drums, your going to have a bad day at just about any speed.

There are plenty of threads here how to scavenge 73-87 parts or do it with a kit from one of the advertisers here, If your thrifty it can be done for well under $500

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

There are still a few around that haven't been lowered.

It's very hard to guess at an accurate price without knowing a great many details about the truck. The most important consideration is rust, or more specifically lack of rust. Rust repair is normally the most expensive part of restoration, especially if you can't do it all yourself. Mechanical improvements are easy by comparison.

If you can check without annoying the current owner, take a vinyl refrigerator magnet and check for bondo in the lower rear of the fenders, bottom corners of the doors, rear cab corners and rockers. Also check the floors for rust or holes. These are frequently found on the floor along the rockers and near the bottom of the side vents.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Ditto on what markeb01 said, and if it annoys the current owner he's hiding something!

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

I like the rims. I run drums, and tow a boat, and use the truck for our landscape business. I am so sick of getting rotors turned on my SVT Focus.
You are going to love that truck. Just do a little every year , and it will start to accumulate. Beyond that , its just good therapy working on it with all the crap going on in the world today. Think of it as your own gift to beautifying America...when you drive it you will see what I mean...almost everyone loves to see one on the road .I always get thumbs up and smiles. The chicks love em.
Always use a jack stand when you are under it, and remember,do it while you can.

Ditto on that , I always get thumbs up ... rust is issue no. 1 mine was punky at the area where the rocker meets the cab , in the weatherstripping channel plus it needed fenders , and other stuff , i paid 800 and after it is all said and done I have 3k before i got it on the road .. So do your homework...

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

Cool truck. Back in '87 me and my buddies painted a 66 yellow like that one. I grew up towing a boat almost every weekend with drums on my 66 stepper. I don't know why it would be any different than now. The speed limit is still the same on most roads. I still have drums on my 65 and can still stop at every light and stop sign. I would spend disc money somewhere else.

Re: think im picking this up on saturday....

as long you service the drum brakes and keep them maintained, you should not have any problems. Yes disc's stop better, as long as you take care of them, they should be fine.

Looks good.
Is it a Chevrolet with a GMC hood or is it GMC with a Chevrolet grille and tailgate? I can't see the dash to tell the difference.
Greg.

Pretty sure.
GMC's didn't come with a Chevrolet grille. Chevrolet's have 1 headlight per side and GMC have 2 per side.
