72 door panels

Has anyone covered their woodgrain inserts on their 72 door panels? I'm thinking of covering mine with the matching houndstooth in the seats. Id like to see what it would look like before I take the plunge. Im working with saddle on white.

Although it's not the same colors that you're going with, here is mine. I had a panel made to match the suede used in the seats. I think it makes a nice custom touch. Good luck!

That looks nice. How is the cloth attached to the door panel.

Re: 72 door panels

The suede is wrapped around its own panels then attached to the door panel using staples from the back of the door panel. Had it done at a local upholstery shop. Let me know if you need anymore details.

Re: 72 door panels

I planned at one point to paint mine the body color of the truck with the raised trim portion then polished back out after the paint was applied then cleared over...with the polished trim around it....

Re: 72 door panels

I also thought about getting a carbon fiber looking vinyl and doing these with it as well as the glovebox door and using a glovebox door for the gauges so that could be done as well....

...for a more modern looking interior....thinking more of the silver carbon fiber look...not the black everyone uses...

Re: 72 door panels

I like that. Easier to picture with the houndstooth. I actually thought of what youre saying, Jonathan, with the paint. My interior metal is white and Ive already painted the steering column, the ashtray, and the background of the glove box the tangerine orange that is basically on the outside. The dash and glove box are wood grain. Now, I dont know if I want to insert the houndstooth or the orange into the saddle door panels. I like the woodgrain panels, but #1) I think its a little too much brown on the saddle, and #2) hard to find perfect and keep them perfect. The buckets are parchment with the brown houndstooth. I know, I thought the parchment would look weird too, but the houndstooth make them blend in, especially with the brown carpet and and the rest of the vinyl (dashpad, headliner) being saddle. Havent decided on the console yet either. Its white now, but its too much, I think. Either going to go back to saddle (brown) or paint it orange as well. Im trying to keep it somewhat stock, with a twist of "what they may have done today". Any input?

Re: 72 door panels

I think laying houndstooth over the inserts would look nice. I know a guy who replicates woodgrain with paint on car interior piece and have been wanting to have a pair done. I offered to give him a spare insert to use as a display...and a test panel before going ahead with mine.
