Dana 44 Front Hub/Rotor Removal?
So I have as many of the bearings, seals and gear components that I can see but the rotor won't pull off. What am I missing?
Chiltons says to "remove the oil seal and inner bearing cone from the hub using a brass drift and hammer." Not sure where that is. Do I knock it out the back side? |

Did you get the snap ring off the end of the axle? If so it should come off with the outer bearing out. Sometimes the old seals can hold on pretty good. The rotor and the hub should come off as an assembly.

Re: Dana 44 Front Hub/Rotor Removal?
I removed one small snap ring off the shaft. Is there more than one? I can wiggle the rotor quite a bit but it feels like something is still in there holding it. I probably need to clean it up and get the grease out so I can see what is going on I guess.

If it wiggles it is prolly just stuck on the seal. A good yank should get it to come off. I was talking about the small snap ring on the outside, so if you have it out of the way it should be smooth sailing.

Re: Dana 44 Front Hub/Rotor Removal?
I just had mine apart the other day, came off in this order. Take off the break caliper, 2 allen screws, 3/8 allen wrech should do it. Then take off Hub with dial, 6 allen screws, then snap ring, then the rest of the hub. Take off nut, then washer, then second nut. The wheel bearing on mine came right out at this point, then some wiggling and pulling brought the rotor and other bearing assembly off, leaving only the spindle with the axle shaft sticking through. The seal in mine was shot on one side, so it came off with no problem, but the other side was kinda sticky, had to wiggle and pull to get it off. If you forget to take off the caliper, the rotor stays conected to the backing plate and you cuss and hollar, ask me how I know.

The inner bearing should come off with the rotor? I can tip the rotor in any direction an inch or so. It feels like something is keeping it on, like a retainer ring!
