Modern AC upgrade

I've been searching, but haven't found the answer. The 1980 (model 1981) squarebody crewcab project I'm working on has all the original heating/AC stuff in it. Now I've bought an upgraded 1996 vortec engine and this has an AC compressor on it from a 1996 C1500.

Can I just connect the old hoses to the new compressor?
Anyone have the wiring schema?
Do I need a new 'heaterbox' from a C1500 on the engine side of my firewall?

All tips and tricks are appreciated, lessons learned and pics are even better!

Re: Modern AC upgrade

I believe you just have to have new lines made for the compressor and wire up the compressors clutch.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply, so you're saying: Reconnect the plumbing, fill it and fire it up?

Re: Modern AC upgrade

I believe it should work but not 100% on that i haven't done that before,But i know you can take a older car or truck and upgrade the compressor to a modern sanderson.Only thing i can think of being the truck was a 96 its probably 134a so you might wanna get a convert kit for 1980 ac stuff.

Re: Modern AC upgrade

Have the hoses made, fill it and fire it. It will work fine. I would replace the reciever dryer while I was there.

Re: Modern AC upgrade

When i did the serpentine conversion i used a '97 blazer v6 serpentine with the blazer style compressor. I tried to crimp my ends on to my '85 hose but they leaked so I went to old air in ft. worth and they charged 75 a piece for a new hose with '85 condenser and dryer ends and the compressor end is a #8 and a #10 screwed onto an adapter that would fit the blazer compressor, that was about 20 from old air. I was already on 134a.

If you need more details or part numbers just post here and i will get it on this thread.
